Do a few of the LSL tutorials at http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/LSL_Tutorial so that you can get a feel for the language.  It is unlike most other languages that you or your students have probably used, in that it is event-oriented instead of having a linear flow.  That is, actions are organized in events that can be triggered at any time by changes in the environment.  Something happens to the scripted object (a collision, a touch, the sun comes up, a cat walks by.....) and it does something in response.  There are so many full perm scripts running around in SL that it won't take long for students to start customizing them to do fun things.
