They are not going to be turned off.  But SL will outgrow them and they will be useless.  Sort of like Windows 98 isn't turned off, it's just not supported anymore and nothing of the modern nature works on it.

It's call progress.  You might as well get used to it.......Viewer 2 and the TPV's coded to that standard are what is going to be the future.  Join or get left behind.

Mesh, which is now in beta, will be coming to the main grid soon (maybe). Older viewers will be unable to display mesh content. So, you can either use a newer viewer (one that supports mesh) or expect to see a lot of "broken" content.

From what they have been saying in their respective forums and blogs, the developers of both Cool VL and Singularity (both based on the old 1.2n code) seem pretty confident that they will be able to display mesh reasonably soon.   Only time will tell if they are correct, of course, but it's by no means certain that 1.2n viewers will vanish from the scene if people want to use them.

well 1.23 most likely will vanish, 1.42 no (the V1 most people are familiar with is 1.23, 1.42 was snowglobe which never made it to the default download). the current V1 TPVs are all based on 1.42 snowglobe code, even henri gave up his 1.23, and 1.19 support

Residents have voiced their preference for v1 based viwers by chosing phoenix more 200% more than v2. (70% phoenix, 30 % v2 and other viewers)  One of the big beatures of v2 is lindens ability to place paid advertisements on our scree when we sish to do a simple search. The primary driver for adaptation of v2 is not user preference but the threat of discontination of v2. Great way to treat customers.
