It's very easy.  Ask them.  Otherwise, there is absolutely no uambiguous way to tell.  There are ways to snoop and find a person's IP address, but that can lead to many false positives and mistaken identities because it could point to anyone on the wireless router in your Starbucks or residence hall (or your sister, using your computer when you aren't home).  Technically, that sort of snooping isn't a TOS violation UNLESS you share the information, which is how one notorious recent snooper got banned from SL permanently.

It is indeed a privacy violation. Residents are entitled to create alts (as you will see on this link).

sometimes there are obvious signs like like using the same first name a lot dressing similarly same style of profile similar talk/chat style acting in the same way but there is no fool proof way unless an av makes it clear they have alts
