Because the latest download of LL's V2 viewer has a bug in it.   Until they fix it, you can un-install this version and re-install a previous one to get prim count back again.

Having the same issue, tired of buggy updates switching to a 3rd party viewer!

That's a very wise decision. I recommend the Firestorm viewer. It is still in beta, but it's already more stable than LL's V2 viewer and it is already the 3rd most popular viewer in use. The full release with several additional features is supposed to be coming out within the next few weeks. See http://www.phoenixviewer.com/

I am having the same problem - no prim counts showing in edit.  I also have textures rezzing where they shouldn't if I turn on basic shaders in my preferences.  The new viewer seems to have more bugs than any other I've used.  I am crashing all the time.  Going back to a previous version.
