Ramona Renard
Hi, everyone! Is anyone else having problems editing the prim tops that now seem to be common with SL clothes designers? I'm at the end of my rope. Why do some designers get it right and others not? Today I bought an outfit and after spending an hour trying to edit it to fit, I gave up. I've edited my shape, rotated and stretched the prims to no avail. No matter what I do, either my boobs aren't covered or the top looks like it's a few sizes to big. This is the 5th time in the last 3 months I've wasted lindens on bad fitting clothes. These 5 stores are now on my "never buy anything from there again" list. I sent nc's to two of the designers but never heard back so I've given up doing that. Btw, I've been in SL going on 4 years and didn't have this much of a problem editing things when I was a noob. Sorry to complain but I'm totally frustrated.:matte-motes-sick:
Sammantha Koppel
Yes!! I've had the same problem! I have dozens of tops I can't wear because I can't get them to fit right. Unlike you, I'm not willing to change my shape for a designer. Now, I avoid buying tops with pieces that fit over the breast area. I know I won't get them to fit. Shelby Silverspar
Yes yes yes, I made myself a rule never to buy sculpted tops, UNLESS THEY HAVE A DEMO, they just don't fit my av.
Ramona Renard
I'm happy to hear it isn't only me :-)) Changing my shape didn't matter. They still don't fit. I made a Piece of Crap Clothes folder and put them in there in the event I want to waste another few hours messing with them. lol
Charolotte Caxton
Interestingly enough, I was just considering that today and had decided to remove my membership from places that I have purchased clothing like that from. Not because they are poorly made or not gorgeous, they are, it just takes so much time trying to get them to fit. It seems to me that those types of clothes are best suited for taking photographs in static poses. Unfortunately, a lot of times its those photos that make me want to have the outfit I suppose also that a skilled builder could make them fit, so perhaps those pieces are wonderful for them because it is wearable customizable art. I have now created two separate folders, dancing dresses and photography dresses, to differentiate between the two different styles, because both can be fantastic, just not always for everyday use. One style is a quick easy fit that you can move around in, the other requires modification and adjustments but can achieve a look that otherwise may not be attainable but is generally not suited for moving around in. I guess I'll keep my memberships after all.
Faithless Babii
What you might have noticed is that quite a few designers now also give you an alpha piece...for the bust area or bottom...to make the item just fit perfectly..I love that. Yes Ive spent countless hours fiddling with a couple of items Ive had and not got a good result...I wonder if we can just buy an alpha for our body parts from somewhere and use that with the items we buy that require SO much playing around with? If it exists I havent seen it..but Id love to buy it if it is out there..
Charolotte Caxton
Yeah, I'm with you, I'm not changing my shape to fit into a dress, I mean, one, I can't and besides, how much of me is gonna be left if I keep changing to fit a style? Anyways, I got this one outfit and it came with a breast hider to make the top fit properly. I'm like, really? It's an alpha layer that gives you two giant holes in your torso, like the alpha layers that some use to hide their feet for boots? I'm like jeez, what's gonna happen when my prim top doesn't rez? Lol, talk about a wardrobe malfunction!
Charolotte Caxton
Thats an interesting thought, an alpha layer that covered ones top completely like for a jacket or prim top, or an alpha layer that totally hid our bottom half, like for a skirt, I suppose would be a lot better than two large holes that would prevent odd non rezzin issues and completely address the issue of body parts stickin out for no mod shapes. Probably already exists, in fact it may be in our inventory, if not its probably doable easy and for free.
Rolig Loon
Yes, it's extremely easy to make a custom alpha mask for any part of your body. Something like that wouldn't be "one size fits all", because the amount of your chest that needs to be hidden will vary depending on how large you are and how tightly your sculpty top is supposed to fit. Still, it's something worth thinking about. Personally, however, I avoid sculpty components in clothing for anything but belts, sashes, ties, bows, and things like that. I have been designing and selling clothes in SL for over 4 years, so I'm not a novice at this. Making a sculpty top or skirt that fits well and doesn't hang like a piece of armor is extremely difficult, and it's almost impossible to make one that can be adjusted to fit all the body shapes in SL. When you add the fact that sculpties cannot be made flexible, you have a recipe for klunky-looking clothing. I won't subject my customers to that, and I won't buy that stuff myself. Faithless Babii
The clothing I have bought that has/is sculpted and has also come with an alpha mask for various body parts is actually pretty fabulous, it just fits perfectly...no fiddling required. Monti Messmer
But wearing an alpha to hide ur shape to fit the top is the same than change ur shape to fit the top ??? Both ways you look like the shirt not you :smileysurprised: ok thats confusing - lol Let´s see if meshes can fix that or just are as bad ... JoJo Moeleneaux
I'm with you there Faithless re alpha masks. Recently I bought a dress that I loved, it was unique and lovely. It was semi transparent in the front but the alpha mask it came with made my middle section invisible so you could see the back of the dress through the front and I had an issue with my rear poking through the back. I spent a bit of time trying to adjust the prims but it didn't help and I knew nothing about apha masks. I contempted changing my shape to fit the dress, I didn't want to but I did love this dress so I contacted the creator and asked if possibly she could assist in fitting the dress to my shape or my shape to the dress. The creator quickly responded and was happy to help. She tp'd me to her location, created a new alpha layer that fixed the problem. I was a big fan of this store beforehand and I'm an even bigger fan now.
JoJo Moeleneaux
An alpha mask hides parts of your body but it doesn't change your shape, well that's my understanding anyway :-) ------------------------- Edited to fix typo.
Charolotte Caxton
Hee, yeah, your right, hiding or shapeshifting to fit into clothes is about the same and so rl I will not let my clothes define and shape me! lol, jk. I like to look good, but I bet it would be a good starting point for a resistance movement.
Charolotte Caxton
Thanks, Rolig. I was thinking that an alpha layer is one size fits all? Like a t-shirt? Also, I was thinking that it would be adjustable, like a jacket layer, in that it could be lengthened shortened etc to accommodate whatever physical part of ourself we are trying to hide? Rolig Loon
It is, Charolotte, but we aren't. If you're selling shoes, you can almost get away with giving everyone the same alpha mask, because we all have pretty much the same size feet. If customers are trying to keep from poking through an ill-fitting sculpty top, though, it makes a difference whether they are flat-chested or a DDDD cup. You have to offer a range of alpha masks or offer custom fitting, as in JoJo's post a few above this one.
Charolotte Caxton
Oh ok, I thought Jojo was saying that the merchant tailored her sculpti top for her and I was thinking an alpha layer conformed to a shape, as in when someone puts on a t-shirt it fits regardless of their shape. JoJo Moeleneaux
Sorry Charolette, I meant my middle from the waist down, the new apha mask the creator made me was fitted to my shape. She asked me to wear a map (I think that's the term) and from that created the alpha mask.
Charolotte Caxton
Oh, cool. I see I have the completely incorrect thought of how alpha layers work. I will go experiment Thanks for the explanation! That was very cool of the merchant to do a custom fit for you, when I was really new I often thought, how great would it be if you could hire a virtual seamstress? Someone who could take your measurements and custom fit you. I suppose it's possible but highly impractical.
JoJo Moeleneaux
Yes it was very cool of her and I'm very happy with the way it turned out :smileyhappy:
Charolotte Caxton
That is so cute! I had pretty much given up on baby dolls! Do notecard me the name of your seamstress if you have a spare moment some time and are so inclined

daivedo
Well to be honest, I don't really understand this process , but I will explain how I understand it. If it is a size problem, I don't think you can modify the prims to make it bigger or smaller, but the creator can. The other problem could that the prims don't have the right x,y,z coordinates. This is where you would use your building skills to move it to the right coordinates
Rolig Loon
Ummm... no. We all know how to modify clothing and move it to hang correctly. The challenge with a sculpty top is that it is a single prim, so there are limits to the ways you can stretch it, and you certainly can't twist or bend it into submission. It's like wearing a barrel. You can make it taller or fatter, but it's still a barrel. You can't pull on just the part that needs to fit over your large chest. Hence, the need for a custom-designed alpha clothing layer to make the body parts that stick out invisible so that you don't get tossed out of PG sims. :smileywink:
