This "interests" thing sounds like a very nice addition to SL. I can envisage it being a good means of forging friendships, getting to know people, and an aid to making the most of SL.

Display Names were created so that people could link their Facebook accounts with their SL accounts; i.e. use the same names on both and FB only allows real names) and this is something that may be attractive to the type of person who uses Facebook, so it looks like SL is still persevering in that direction. But, apart from that, it does sound like a good addition to SL in its own right. I'm against the out-of-the-blue email aspect of it though, unless you can opt out of receiving emails from it.
