I was forced to download a new viewer this morning and now I crash as soon as I appear in world.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the program,  I checked for windows updates and driver updates.  It tells me my display driver stopped responding and recovered.  I have NVIDIA GForce 8500GT card that has worked fine for a couple years.  There was a message right after the forced viewer download of "resetting my configuration to fit my system"

There are bugs with the update. Deinstall the new version completely and reinstall the previous version. Or, login with a TPV viewer:

That Windows message about your display driver stopped working but has recovered is a pretty good sign your video is failing.  It will not get any better and some day when you boot your computer you'll find it's not going to work at all.....you computer may even fail to boot up.  The 8500 card is 4 years old.  If it has ever overheated in the past, or has accumulated dust and never (or seldom) been blown out, that's about all that can be expected from the card. 

 

I wouldn't wait for the coming complete failure if I were you.

Try reducing your graphic settings. From mid to low maybe. The defaults are in my opinion are set to high. I always set them back and also use an older card.
