When you chat are they saved only onto the computer or do they also get saved on a server?

I was wondering because I found like a lot of old messages from Second Life and I was wonder if I turned off the saved messages to my computer will they still be saved on a server

It is possible that LL has saved a copy of every IM ever written in SL...Who knows what sort of junk they choose to save lol....But if you are asking if you would be able to get a copy of old messages if you didn`t save them yourself, then the answer would be no.

I'd be very surprised if they DID save copies of IMs, but you are right - Who knows. Guess stranger things have happened in the past...

Linden Lab definitely saves chat and IM logs at least for a little while. They do this in order to resolve possible resident disputes. Griefing accusations for instance can be resolved more easily when they can consult chat logs.

I think I recall reading that the logs are not saved indefinitely, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if they were. So yes, I would assume that anything I've ever written in SL can (in theory) be read by staff.

With the reduction in force LL experienced a few months ago, I would not worry about someone reading your chat logs.  Even before the layoffs, I highly doubt anyone was charged with that boring job.
