My avatar is stuck in the editing my appearance state and I can't get her out. Help.

Have you tried Stop Avatar Animations?  Depending on which viewer you're using, it may be in the World menu or the Avatar menu or the Me menu.  Wherever it is, though, click it.  That should clear any animations you have running, including the Appearance one.  Just in case it doesn't, I'll pass you a tool in world that WILL work.
