hi maretch \o :matte-motes-smile:

i don't claim to be any technical genius, but i found this thread - http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Technical/When-I-log-in-my-internet-disconnects-How-can-I-fix-it/qaq-p/872059 - and it looks like the symptoms are very similar to what you are experiencing, so perhaps you could try the suggestions listed there?

You could have a firewall blocking access.  Take a look at >>>> http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Configuring_your_firewall

and >>> http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/How_do_I_configure_my_software_firewall_%28such_as_Norton_Internet_Security,_McAfee_Personal_Firewall,_or_ZoneAlarm%29

There are other possibilities as well, but start there.

Any electronic device creates heat when it's working.  Routers and modems are no exception.  You say your router "resets".  I take that to mean that it shuts off and restarts (that's the routers are reset).  I suspect you have a heating problem.  If, by chance, you are using a Linksys 430N router, I had that router for about 4 years and it demonstrated the same issues you are experiencing (from almost day one when I installed in my network).  I went to Linksys's support forum and asked that the problem was.  I was directed to another very long thread with the same problem and while reading through that thread for a solution (or how I could return it for replacement) I read post by a Linksys technical (I believe he was on the development team but not sure) that stated the model had a known heat problem and that Linksys was working on a fix.  He further said that a temporary fix was to elevate the router to allow more air to flow under the device (the only ventilation for the router were the vent holes on the underside and the router sat too low........the little feet were too little, I guess).

I elevated my router and the problem ceased immediately.  I never returned the router, and really didn't think much about the problem again because I never experienced another unexpected shut down and restart.  That router was working just fine two months ago when I replaced it with a new router (I only replaced it because I found what I thought was a good deal on a better router..........I was correct too :) ).  Try elevating your router.  A small wire cake or cookie rack is ideal.

Do you have an ATI graphics card by any chance? If you have an ATI video card then you may need to do these steps (SL viewers seem to not play well with ATI cards, none of them). Other types of video cards also require that the first step here be done; VBO is known to cause crashes in multiple different scenarios.

  • Disable VBO: Run the viewer and before logging in, press Ctrl-P to bring up the Preferences window. Then open the Hardware Options (It's label is a little different from one viewer to another, but there's always a tab or a button that takes you to a next page.)  Look for Enable OpenGL Vertex Buffer Objects and click it OFF.
  • Disable AI in Catalyst:
    • Right click on your desktop (or right click the ATI logo in the bottom right tray) and select Catalyst Control Center;
    • In catalyst control center go to the advanced options menu;
    • Then click on the 3D tab on the left side. Catalyst A.I. will be amongst the labels there;
    • Tick the box next to 'Disable Catalyst A.I.'
