We got 20p extra (weddings were 50p) in the choir So that was a bonus. Later it was l'Action de grâce in Québec which was a day off. Third Thursday of November was of course Beaujolais nouveau time.. So happy memories all round. Here its back to harvest festival Sunday - which is nice. So yes happy and safe to those across the pond or celebrating elsewhere. (although would be happy if the 'Black Friday' thing was repatriated - morphed in to a week+ here grumble mutter =^^= ) 1

In the Netherlands we have a sortlike named day as thanksgiving- dankdag, but that's pure( protestant) religious, and in some regions, on different dates during the first week of november. The katholics had something like it too, but that disappeared very fast after the modern times started in the sixties, and that was also pure liturgical. 2

I asked Chat GPT and it said it is only the Brits, Germans, Austrians and Swiss that celebrate the harvest festival so I have been spreading fake news, apologies! It said the closest equivalent for the Dutch is Sint Maarten (Saint Martin's Day) which is celebrated on November 11, this feast day marks the beginning of the winter and dark period before Christmas. It's celebrated in some parts of the Netherlands, including Groningen, North Holland, and Limburg. So even that celebration seems regional. I officially retract my desire for Sid to have a happy Harvest Festival and must insist he refrain from paticipating in any harvest themed celebrations. 2

Well done on admitting the errors of your ways - there should be more of it on the forums! 🙂 Great compassion on display in your request for Sid to not getting involved in any wild frolicking based on erroneous information about a Harvest Day which doesnt exist for him, unless he is in Groningen etc. Which reminds me... I fell in love with a girl from Groningen many moons ago. sighs.... Returning from that tangent... You might have saved Sid great embarrassment and public humiliation. I applaud you. (The original Santa Claus). Has nothing to do with harvest or thanksgiving but it is a fun time of the year when one has young kids in the family. Edited November 29 by Sid Nagy 3

Here a drawing from 1849: Now a days he is here in the Netherlands a nice old bishop who brings presents and visits schools for the kids to celebrate his saints day on December 6. In other parts of Europe he is underway with Krampus (the devil), like here in Austria. Edited November 29 by Sid Nagy 2 1

When I was growing up in Nederland, I was led to believe that it was zwarte Piet who did the spanking while Sinterklaas remained kindly. The good cop, bad cop routine. 1
