Pixie Kobichenko Posted November 19 Posted November 19 I know, semi-clickbaitish title- did it work- are you reading? *let me preface this by saying I"m not knocking old prim or flexie or sculpties, I can't do anything more than rez a prim and slap a texture on it* So out wandering mainland tonight, I clicked on the map (which I noticed I no longer have detailed map info- I can only double click a spot blindly & see where I land) & found myself in apparently really very old mainland & I stumbled on Luna Oaks Galleria Mall- info here: https://slgi.fandom.com/wiki/Luna_Oaks_Galleria_Mall. LM: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Luna/88/87/22 Created in/around 2004, before the predecessor to the MP existed (the LX or something? I can't remember) there was shopping malls for miles filled with mountains of blingy prims, shoes that made clicks noises as you strutted, flexi hair that would sway into the breeze & into everyone around you's heads & prim cuffs and collars system layer pantaloons & blouses. With the exception of a few shops here that have mesh- it's like a step back in time - a way way wayback machine. Lots of sculpties & flexi skits etc. I got curious (not that it makes a difference to my SL- I'm just nosey) how this all works since it most of all of it seems outdated? The land is owned by Governor Linden (2003). The land group is Luna Oaks Galleria Tenants. The group owner is Mick Linden & the description says: "Group for Luna Lottery. Leaseholders should wear group title when placing objects so they are not auto-returned. Please do not exceed your allocated prim allowances or objects may be returned to you. Contact Amber, Lexie, George or Mia Linden with any questions." None of those names, nor Mick's appear in search. So how would it work for someone who did create things to get to try to participate (not that I think the land gets much traffic- but the island it sits on is to the SE of Bay City)? I know it's a nothing burger, but I'm a frequent rabbitholer on google & reddit & the like for things that don't matter at all- so I was curious if anyone knew how it worked, if at all? Or if this is forgotten land that just continues to be used by the same renters as long as they pay their fees? 6

The people got their stalls at a lottery ages ago as far as I know (I could be wrong about this) and they seem to have kept them throughout the years. However, there are a few of those tiny stalls that are completely empty nowadays, and don't seem to have an "owner." As someone who absolutely loves those old prim mall-style builds (like the Port of Kama City at http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Mosh/129/21/25 and the Boardman http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Boardman/124/135/66 and Brown http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Brown/116/147/66 market stalls) I think it'd be very interesting if they had another lottery for the empty little stalls. Either that or auctioning them off - it'd be extremely profitable for LL. Another thing I would really enjoy seeing used or auctioned off is the abandoned mall located at Mosh South (http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Mosh South/126/219/66) though I highly doubt that will ever happen. It's protected land, but maybe someday. Edited November 19 by Clem Marques 1 2

I'm fiddling w/ making system layer shirts- I learned how to do that this week after 15 years But I will definitely go wander around those LMs, thank you for them, Clem. I had simliar questions a few weeks ago and awhile back for the memorial gardens. There's one I found that is flowers that have hovering text vertically & there's a sign to click for info on how to do your own memorial, but the sign is non-functional, same with a larger memorial area (the memorials are quite large) that I did determine are no longer allowed to be requested to memorialize someone. Curiosity has the better of me, because I know there would/could be a renewed interest in these types of things that are linden controlled as opposed to memorial areas privately ran (nothing wrong w/ them at all- I just liked the linden ones better) -of note, during one of my mainland wanders recently Clem, I happened upon your gallery! As big as it is, second life can be a very small world. 2
Jaylinbridges Posted November 19 Posted November 19 I visited there after seeing your post. Someone should send Philip Linden there to pick out a new outfit and avatar. 8
Midnoot Posted November 19 Posted November 19 Yeah ,I find these places all the time while I'm exploring mainland and I hate it with a passion . We need to eradicate the past of second life because the past of second life is what prevents second life from having a future . A mere glance at the hideous monstrosities from before mesh, deters the strongest of " I play games for the gameplay , not for the graphics " , users . Especially texture clothing . Now days , bom layers are only good for tattoos , makeup , skin modifications , skins , under clothing , socks , stockings , etc . Never as the main jacket , top , shirt, pants , etc . That's how we time travel back into 2003 , regardless of the mesh you're using . And sure , it's nostalgic and mysterious to think about how these ancient relics were used in the past , but for the sake of second lyfe's future , delete them p:..... I am literally depressed apon discovering some decrepit , old , prim square town full of low res textures , no mesh vegetation , or any realistic vehicles . Talk about ruining immersion of second life ... When you come from a beautifully decorated parcel full of modern mesh models , straight into something uglier than a Nintendo 64 game ... 😭 1 1

I am always surprised when I am traveling around and see ugly pre-mesh houses filled with prim furniture. It is so easy and cheap to buy mesh products that look miles better. But for whatever reason, some residents hang onto the past. 4 2 1

I tracked down a LOST Dharma Swan station hatch this week- I guess I'm rewatching the series once year (this year is the 3rd time I"ve watched the series total). I remembered I had a hatch in SL oh so long ago when I was new. Pre mesh. Found it but had to ask the creator for a modifiable version because the MP one as delivered wouldn't sink into the ground. It's very primmy for what it is, but I'm feeling very nostalgic with it- strung out some Dharma Initiative food shipment supplies and dynamite from the Black Rock. Now if I could just find a particle smoke monster to guard my land. 4 1
SlammedSam Posted November 19 Posted November 19 I have a fondness for old school SL builds myself. I fondly remember a place circa 2011 that basically looks like the Jetson's drive in. 😃 And prims are still rather powerful and useful if you know how to use them. 5

It’s an experience, watching it 20 years after the first go- noticing things I didn’t before (or last year) & the difference in perspective after nearly half my life gone by now, with loss of loved ones & changes in circumstances etc. LOST is such a unique program. If you did really enjoy it, two of the LOST producers- writers and the actor who played Michael are into the 3rd season of a show called From. Same type of tension & mystery but w a horror side. 2

Frionil Fang Posted November 19 Posted November 19 I kinda love concentrated archeological sites like this. I wasn't here before 2010 but I still enjoy seeing the even older stuff, and I'm generally way too lazy to just go Mainland-spelunking and deal with the actual navigation, so an abandoned mall is a good way to get a glimpse in one spot. There should be a destination guide category for these, would go and nostalgize 2

Luna Oaks is my favorite place in all of Second Life (not necessarily the Galleria, there are several Regions with "Luna Oaks" surrounding it). This is where I met my old SL family, and spent most of my time the first year or two. The Luna Oaks trolley station nearby was a popular hangout for whoever chose to be there. (Just across from the mall.) The trolley is purposefully, permanently broken in a "neat way" (but still works). People tended to hang out in Luna Oaks who were "born" in nearby Ahern. 2

The current "renters" may be switched out on occasion with someone else, I have no clue. Note that there are two "large" open shops on either end of the Luna Oaks Galleria - they are both attended by a single "renter"; I have noticed those seem to go empty more often (every few years). One has escalators which are built in. Be sure to explore BEHIND the mall - keep going up, you will find an eagle's nest on top of the peak. There are plenty of other things to explore, I won't spoil it for you. 1 1

Love Zhaoying Posted November 19 Posted November 19 Not mentioned earlier: Luna (all of Luna, not just the Galleria Mall) is a great place to explore for new users: - Aforementioned Trolley takes you to other nearby regions - Fountain with controls to play with - Nearby water (is it a "bay"?), by the trolley station - Board game above the fountain (secret rez area) - Stores, "Hey, you can BUY stuff in Second Life!?!" - More stuff (no more spoilers) 1 1

(Aside from the ride just being cute- it was a small barrel boat that fit a handful of people). Happy memories there- so I’m swapping out “wandering mainland” for “spelunking the grid” 2

Oh yea I noticed the tracks up the embankment but no trolly while I was nosing around. I met my original chunk of friends because of camping for lindens (those were the days) at a spot named Galveston that looked nothing like real Galveston, but I would never remembered it if not for the name 😃 There was barely more traffic in the Luna Oaks region on the land tab than my rented home plot- so there’s no one there anymore really.

("Injun Joe's Cave" - not politically correct, but it was about the Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn story.) 1
