StarkMK87 Posted November 17 Posted November 17 I know they basically just gave us the last names feature, but why do we have to be grouped under the same names as everyone else? Can't we get the option to enter custom names?
Rowan Amore Posted November 17 Posted November 17 We've never had the ability for custom last names UNLESS you pay quite a bit... Upon creation of a custom surname, the account designated as owner will be billed a US$500 setup fee plus the first annual US$500 fee. On each anniversary date, the owner will be billed US$500 to retain custom surname ownership. Last names must clearly be an organizational or corporate name, and distinguished from personal last names (surnames). For example, "Smith" is not acceptable, but "SmithCorp," "SmithInc," "SmithProducts" or "SmithConstruction" are. Linden Lab will consider names that are clearly made up or composite (for example, "SecondLife" or "Agilent") 2 2
StarkMK87 Posted November 17 Author Posted November 17 Oh i know we didn't. But since they are introducing the ability to change between preset ones, couldn't we now, or even before, natively get the ability to enter custom ones. Since we could always change first names.
Claireschen Hesten Posted November 17 Posted November 17 We used to have the ability, it was prohibitively expensive for your average pleb and only really meant for RL corporations. If a last name you want isn't on the list you can always suggest one as long as it hasn't been used before using this form https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScEQ2BuIh0BiwZyTYShEkQOkeJLbpVMLmKPTCsXSSRt1XeThw/viewform http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Lab_Official:Current_Last_Names is the list of all the used names 1
StarkMK87 Posted November 17 Author Posted November 17 Aah thank you i'll give it a try. I figured it should have been just as easy to give all users the ability to do it. I didn't realise it was a costly thing though. Appreciate your feedbacks.

Also new in the new system is thats is changeble. Again, i know we didn't, emphasis on did not. But now we can change between presets, one thinks that Lindens had the ability to give people the choice of last names, just as they did first names. It makes no sense why, now that they offer such an ability to change surnames, we can't just enter a custom name.Rather than be grouped under the now available presetss...
Ambrosia Caiben Posted November 27 Posted November 27 My jaw hit the ground when they told me how much it would cost to get a custom name. I've been in other virtual worlds where you could buy a token and as long as no one else was using it, you could. The cost was 10 bucks....not 500.00 1

The text of a last name isn't stored in your account information; it's a number that's looked up in a database. Custom last names would need to be added to the database and there would be all sorts of issues with that. 1

But if there are suckers who will pay the $500 per year, why not charge it?

What happens when someone logging in from Australia picks "Johnson" as a last name which is entered as 10678, and someone else on the other side of the world enters "Johnson" at the same which is then entered as 10994? What happens when there's a "Miller" (two lower-case "L"'s), a "MiIIer" (two upper case "I"'s), and then a "MilIer" and a "MiIler" (one of each; different orders)? Meanwhile, the database would have to be constantly updated and re-read for anyone else to know what all these new last names were. Kinda makes it look simpler to just give yourself your needful last name by naming yourself "FirstnameLastname", don't it? 1

Now tell the "Last names are seaux important because they mean people don't have to use Ebil Random Letters and Numbers" crowd that the only way to tell two people apart may be by using their UUID's.

It should be easy enough for SL to insist on all alpha characters for name creation.
