Why doesn't SL have built-in translator? Copying and pasting responses into two Google Translate boxes when helping noobs in 2024 is really silly.

Also, Eve Online, which is not user friendly at all, has a great feature where you can send a "link" to a part of the hud, so, when you are helping new players, you can show them exactly where to click. SL would be much easier to get with that.

What languages do the noobs speak? I'm honestly curious. Is it exactly like one would think? Or would I be surprised?

People use readily available scripts for translation, for many years now.

ETA: I meant "items/objects" that use such scripts, sorry.

I agree with you for IM's. Local chats have it already but noone talks there anyway.

Largely Spanish and French

The Google Translate ones have been broken for years. Which ones work now?

Yep, it is time. Years ago.

I'd prefer it to stay in as I've set all the hairs in my inventory to attach to the skull so that clicking Wear removes the existing one and replaces it with a new one. The same with my heads, bodies, dresses, tops, skirts etc. It is a time saver when I've put the work in to dictate where it is to attach to.

It used to, but most of the free translation services used by SL tools went away.

Yeah I really should do it this way rather than removing one and adding another but... I think on balance just getting rid of it would still be better, it's such a noob trap.

I agree it is a noob trap but OTOH I think overall we have less to worry about in getting new users then in retaining existing ones.

Firestorm has a built-in translator.   It is under Chat, Typing tab, translation.   You can set it up against microsoft or google.   Look like google charges but the prices seem pretty reasonable.   I don't know about the Azure service.

I want a local chat that's just local chat.  Nothing else.  The 'you teleported from x to y', and people entering and leaving, and script errors, and even song titles off the stream... all that stuff needs to go in it's own chat tab, along side the group IMs, where I can ignore it or review it for useful information when I need it.  Local chat should be chat, from people.

This might make chat extenders difficult.  Chat extenders extend chat beyond the 20m, sometimes even across region boundaries, and they are useful for teachers and rock stars.  I think we can solve the issue of filtering avatar and object chat by using the radar to detect avatar names beyond 20m, then match avatar names to the chat extender name, because chat extenders usually change their name to an avatar's name to extend the chat.

Or it could just break chat extenders.  I wouldn't mind if it broke chat extenders.

Maybe it would be good to be able to turn this feature off and on, to move the spammy chat to main so chat extenders work when they are important, and then move spammy chat back to the IM tabs when it's not important (95% of the time, for most people, it's not important)

To not have log in times effected by inventory. I don't feel I should have to spend nearly a full minute [not a terrible time, but compared to my alt who can log in in 20 seconds roughly] to fully get logged in and settled.

While I'm quite aware from things I've read that SL wasn't necessarily intended to handle all this stuff originally, the fact is this is the normal now, and SL should be able to keep up.

ETA; Nor is it right to ask users to delete things they may still want and use to achieve this.

1 minute to login is quite extreme! I wonder why your situation is so bad?

I think a lot of those chat alerts can be turned off in Preferences>Notifications on Firestorm at least.

Oh, I want the alerts!  The alerts are useful.  The alerts would just be a lot more useful if they weren't intermingled with chat, and chat would be more useful if it wasn't intermingled with alerts.

1 minute is really bad.  Just moving some things around might help you.  How big is your received items folder?

I assume it's my inventory at 300k+, my alt has way, way less and takes less time. My sis gets in fairly quickly too and has less inventory to. I'm just glad it's organized, I'd hate to see the time if it were linear.

40 items, I stay pretty on top of it. My inventory is organized, but it's 300k too.
