Most of my accounts/characters have actual home locations (private parcels) they can start in the Second Life world upon login. The advantage of a private home is of course, being able to rezz things and change outfits in a quiet and private area.  The ones that don't have a private parcel to call home have their home location set at the Ahern Welcome Area on the mainland. Rezzing things is done at Sandbox Island. Before Gopi became a premium account (long time ago), he and the others usually started in London City or Sandbox Island.

The total number is a secret, but I have a mix of characters/accounts. Women, men, and non-human.

Before I had a home parcel I would log in at my last location, wherever that was. Usually it was in a hangout sim somewhere, occasionally it was an infohub. There were loads of times where it was in some random place I stumbled upon while I was exploring.

I've always had a home, I started renting from Ravenglass in 2006, then bought mainland. I can't imagine having to log into a sandbox or something.

Yeah, I see what you mean. I'm so used to logging into a private parcel that I've almost forgotten what it was like before I had one....

I just log into where I logged out when I don't have money-sink premium. If I have premium I log into my linden house . I ain't scared of immediate human interaction apon logging in !

Sandbox for changing clothes or editing things . I ain't scared to get cammed by freaks 2 sims away with draw distance on 1k.🔪

I’m usually at the bottom of an ocean sim.

That's a good option too. My favorite spot is this one: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Piegler/17/10/23

It's a rez zone, so you can be at the bottom of the ocean, and rez anything you need down there. Good place to unpack purchases, test things, or dress your avatar. Almost no one goes there, so you can have a fair amount of privacy as well.

Often where I logged out, even when I do have an own home, and I have a few spots to choose from in the drop-down, which always includes a sandbox that's been there for many years already and hopefully not going away before I will, and some "pretty landscape, feel free to explore and take photos" type of places. Yes, there's been times I kogged into someone's private place, when owners had changed, quel horreur.

@Gopi Passiflora, there's no reason your non-parcel-owning avatars can't set their home location at one of your parcels. Just change the parcel settings as needed.

You mentioned Ahern - my home location was at nearby Luna for many years. Much calmer place.

I live on the beta grid for free. When I returned to SL in March I found a region there that allowed me to rez stuff and my items have never been returned. What started out as a small testing platform is now a fully built region, plus there is the bonus of free uploads, then the double bonus of no annoying people.

My main got a linden log home 2 years ago and she invited one of my alts to set home there.  The main abandoned the home.  When my alt logs in she logs into the main room of that house, which has been in maintenance for about 2 years since my main abandoned it.   Makes it a nice place to change clothes,  etc and if I need to run any scripts I just TP right outside the parcel.

The real question is why is that particular parcel still in maintenance after 2 years?  I've also notice a few Linden homes that never seem to come out of maintenance and get put back into the pool.

I almost always had an own spot to call home in SL.
But there was a period with very little activity from my side for several months, where I very seldom logged in and had no land holdings.
I found a nice place under a bridge. I always landed there to start SL.
