I've just come across an interesting bug that occurs in the LL viewer and in the Alchemy viewer, so probably in all viewers that use LL's code.

Using an alt, I tried to rez a no-copy object on my land, but it failed because she didn't have the group activated. So the object didn't rez BUT it disappeared from her inventory, just as though it had been rezzed. On relogging, the item was in her inventory exactly where it should have been, so it wasn't lost. I did it a few times and always got the same result. (I didn't try closing and opening the inventory to see if it reappeared).

Is this a known bug?

That's an ancient bug, whether LL knows but doesn't feel it's easy to fix/has forgotten about it over the years is a good question. Never have come across any other workaround other than a relog to make the inventory catch up.

I've run into this too. It can be scary if it's an expensive item!!! Especially the first time, when I didn't know it would reappear!!!

This has been happing for at least a decade.  The bad news is that sometimes it never comes back. Often a day later --- sometimes never. One reason that I (and others) are not fond of no copy items.  ^^  So don't count on things coming back LOL.

The Logic behind this phenomenon is fairly straightforward.  When you "rez" a no-copy item it perforce leaves your inventory.  It cannot arrive on the region because that avatar does not have "rez rights" ie permission to rez an item.

The conventional expectation is that the item should return to the inventory ofthe rezzing avatar.  This is not the case.  The item is moved into a (possibly rather nebulous) temporary location in the region's asset-server buffer and from there it "should" be returned to the original avatar (account inventory) when next the account reconnects to SL.

That is why re-logging "usually" returns said no copy item.  It should also return if or when that avatar teleports, since a teleport involves effectively disconnecting and reconnectingthe avatar from and back to SL. That is why at a failed TP you are "usually" returned to your Home position because SL has simply lost track of you.

Now all these "usual" and "normal" actions are subject to the usual vagaries of SL, ie the scripts may or may not run correctly.

Sometimes the inventory asset-server loses  this item which has become orphaned fromits correct account.  The item may simply vanish into virtual thin air, ifit does it is gone, forever.

Linden Lab has never accepted resposibility for such random occurrences, despite the angst and pecuniary loss that is produced.  Whether they are right (morally) to do that is the subject of debate.

The most perplexing situation is when a no-copy item fails to rez and does NOT return upon a relog, yet miraculously returns at some future point in time.

Where did it go??

THAT is the correct question.

ETA: this topic is better suited to the Server forum than the Viewer forum since the phenomenon is almost entirely Server/system side.

Incidentally, if you have "rez rights" at co-ordinates 0,0,0 (ie a bottom corner) on a sim, have a look down there for missing stuff.  I've been amazed to find odds and ends down there in the past.

What it is doing THERE is way above my pay-grade to know!
