Rat Luv Posted September 25 Posted September 25 I know that now we can pay to change our names. But I was wondering...do you like the SL name you picked? Do you think it reflects your personality? Or do you dislike it? 😬 I am a bit 'meh' about mine. I didn't put any thought into it...I do actually like rats 🐀 but that wasn't why I picked it...I would have to ask me 14 years ago, I honestly can't remember why now Sometimes people get a bit funny about it, like they think it's a 'love rat' joke, or that I'm a griefer, and sometimes club hosts say "Hi Luv!" instead of Rat (one older American man said he thought Rat was too disrespectful...I thought, well, I did pick it, it's not like I had bad SL parents who scarred me for life) Anyway, identity is important...I'm just curious to know whether you like your name and think it represents you, or would you like to change it? Or have you changed your name and THEN regretted it? 11 1
Love Zhaoying Posted September 25 Posted September 25 Yes? First name was chosen for obvious reasons. Last name was chosen for obscure reasons. Perhaps I'd change my last name if I could buy what I want. It stopped bothering me years ago that people assumed I may be female from my name. 4
CaerolleClaudel Posted September 26 Posted September 26 Rat Luv, I have always loved your name! However, I have never seen 'rat' as a noun, that is as the little furry animal. Rather I have seen it as an adjective to Luv. I have always thought of rat luv as a quirky kind of way of experiencing the world, just its own thing. Hope that is ok. Back when I set up my first account, we could pick from a list of last names (like you guys; explaining for anyone who doesn't know). I had an idea that I wanted to be a faerie, or at least faerie-ish/faerie-adjacent. The name Llewellyn was available, and that seemed like a great fit. My RL name is Carol, which I have always found really boring, so I redid it to make it more fae and also maybe fit better with Llewellyn. So, I became Caerolle Llewellyn. I liked that name, but I kept getting asked if I was Welsh. Turns out Llewellyn is a classic Welsh name. I did not want to be appropriating something, so I came up with a different display name, Caerolle Claudel. The new last name came from Camille Claudel, a French sculptor who was was severely victimized by the sculptor Auguste Rodin and by her Christian fundamentalist brother, Paul. Really tragic story and I wanted to honor her. Plus, I like French stuff lol. After a lot of years I decided I wanted to go all in on Claudel, or at least as far in as I could lol. LL no longer offered last names, everyone was just Resident, and even if they still had last names you still would not have been able to create your own. Same as now. So, I made the account I use now, CaerolleClaudel Resident. I spent a fair amount of money (to me) replicating my avi and repurchasing all the stuff I wanted to use in the new account. That is still who I am now. And yeah, I like my name a lot, and feel it really fits me. 5
Madi Melodious Posted September 26 Posted September 26 I love my name. My first name was picked out for me by family. I was named by one of my sisters. My last name was different. I didn't like it at first, but it has grown on me and people say it fits me. 6
Simo Vodopan Posted September 26 Posted September 26 I love it, suits me perfectly and with the rarity of the last name, thats more to it. 3
Dragon Mommy Posted September 26 Posted September 26 I paid money for this name and regret it only a little each time I get a 'mommy 🥵' message from a stranger. 😜 Not really complaining, I knew what I was getting into. It's a good natured injoke with dear friends, so I can't see myself ever changing it. ❤️ 4 2
Claireschen Hesten Posted September 26 Posted September 26 I like my last name far more than my first. My first name ended up as a mashup when i couldn't have the name i wanted and couldn't think of another name i'd rather be known as. I remember on the last names list were Hesse, Hester, Hesten and Heston i think was on there too. I spent a bit of time flip flopping between whether i wanted to be Claireschen Hester or Claireschen Hesten, the latter won out just sounds better to me. Would i change my first name? No, after more than 16 years it's grown on me. it's unique i couldn't imagine getting used to another name. 4
Freckles Fairelander Posted September 26 Posted September 26 Yes. (The one thing all versions of my avatar have had in common over the years is that I always give them freckles, which I lack in RL.) 3
Chery Amore Posted September 26 Posted September 26 I was originally Cherylinn Resident and of course always hated the Resident part. My name had been shortened to Chery (Sherri) for quite awhile before I got the bought name. Many people on meeting assume my name is Cherry but I've gotten that all along so what can you do? I love the name I have. 3

I changed some of my usernames, yes i have multiple Most a complete first and last name change. Except a couple of "residents" who got a new last name i changed most of my old accounts back to at least their original last name, with one or two exceptions for a first name i never really liked 1

Dorientje Woller Posted September 26 Posted September 26 Rezzed as Dorientje Woller and still using it. 3
Marianne Little Posted September 26 Posted September 26 I kind of like it. But it was not what I had in mind. When I joined SL, I thought we could use a last name we wanted, and as long as it wasn't offensive or taken, it would be accepted. No, it was a list instead. I had decided on the name Liberty Moore. I had to make up something else, so I took the name of a doll I had as a child, and it was a little doll. It was an adequate name. If the last name came up as an option to pay for now, Marianne Little has become my SL identity, I would stay Marianne Little. I am really happy we had last names for free back then. 3
Raspberry Crystal Posted September 26 Posted September 26 (edited) I have never really understood the timeline of the naming system and how it was changed to 'resident', and what the logic was of doing that. I picked out a few character alts in early days and liked all their names. In fact thinking about this has made me wonder if I could dig up Ducky Bigboots, photography prop, avatar guinea pig and stooge extraordinaire. I loved her name, if not her personality, which was sadly lacking due to neglect. The old naming system was part of the personality of second life, and current naming, and display names seem to have gone a bit spECIal chaRACter asterisk, whereas new second names = three dollar signs cASh gRAb, *cough*. sirhc DeSantis Posted September 26 Posted September 26 Yep. Well grown used to it so who else could I be? Mind you - 'Rat Luv' is awesome. 2
Ishka Magic Posted September 26 Posted September 26 Yes I do. I choose Ishka over 20 years ago as a nick for a chatroom. It is the name of a Star Trek character I adore. And when I joined SL, 'Magic' as lastname was the perfect fit for me. 5
Anastasia Loxingly Posted September 26 Posted September 26 I grew to hate it. But I can't think of a decent alternative, alas. 3
Scylla Rhiadra Posted September 26 Posted September 26 Yes. My last name I chose because I'd just finished reading Kingsley Amis's The Old Devils, and there's a wonderful woman in it whose name is Rhiannon. And I liked that it sounded vaguely Welsh for some reason. As for my first name . . . well, who wouldn't want to be named after a glamorous mythological sea monster that swallowed men whole?!?!? "Hey, sailor. Care to buy a girl a drink? And maybe a meal . . . ?" 2 2

Sid Nagy Posted September 26 Posted September 26 (edited) When I picked my last name I did so, because Nagy is an old noble name in Europe (from Hungary). A lot of people in SL link it to nagging though. So I would not chose it again. I might have changed it in the past, if the Lab would only have come up with suitable neutral names, that sound good. To be honest, I gave up following closely which last names are available. But that is mainly because I feel, that I'm drifting away from the platform fast now. So Nagy will do until my SL will end. I'm more on the forums than inworld lately. That is not a good sign. Edited September 26 by Sid Nagy spelling 5

Garnet Psaltery Posted September 26 Posted September 26 Psaltery was the only last name available that felt like me when I joined, and Garnet is because I tried to think of something I like, and I like garnets. They bring to mind a necklace I had when I was 5, and I've always liked Anglo-Saxon ornamentation and jewellery, where garnets feature widely. I don't especially think about whether I like the whole name; it's just what I'm used to and how other people know me here. 5
ananoelle Posted September 26 Posted September 26 9 hours ago, Rat Luv said: one older American man said he thought Rat was too disrespectful...I thought, well, I did pick it, it's not like I had bad SL parents who scarred me for life) I always say that if I can't read a display name, I will address the person by the name they chose when they created their account, so if that is Sl#tty1234, then that is what I will refer to them as. As you say, "You picked the name" not I lol I like my name and did put thought into it and often, get comments on it. There are only 3 others with it in SL and the other two have digits after it (I think one was made to troll me with ..long story) SO there are only really, 2. Same with my alt there are only 2 avis with the name and the second is older but has digits after.. why someone would do that baffles me. One thing is the pronunciation of it lol some say anna knowlee and some say it how it is supposed to sound... Ana no el 4
Frionil Fang Posted September 26 Posted September 26 (edited) I'm not 100% happy with it, I've gotten to the point that I want to shorten it to Frio but every single last name since it became an option they've been offering hasn't sparked joy, so I've stuck with it. My name is actually one of those "yeah whatever I'll check this game out so I'll recycle a name from a RP MUD I played" ones. Not that the name was that original to begin with on the MUD, it's one letter off from the Japanese name of a character from Final Fantasy 2... Firion was known as Frioniel in the J version.
