Gees, Simonastick had better looking avatars than that, although I would have to get windows 7 up and going again if I wanted to revisit that.

At least they have legs.. (/me points to another place where the avatars don't have legs)

Hoverboarding!  Actually, vehicles, in general, were better on There.com.  Larger regions helped a lot, but even if you stayed in a small area, there.com vehicles were just so buttery smooth, I could just cruise on them for hours.  You know, like a good open world driving game like GTA IV or Burnout Paradise.  That's what it was like to cruise around there.com.

Driving a car in SL is the most frustrating experience on the grid, IMHO.  Acceleration is jerky, and nothing cruises at a constant speed.  You have to keep your finger on the up arrow most of the time.  If you get a nice car with cruise control, you usually can't use it because of the jerky behavior of land vehicles.  LL would have to add some LSL functions, if they wanted SL scripters to even come close to matching the land vehicle quality of there.com.  Boats don't seem to have the issue that cars and motorcycles do.

I like boats in SL.  It's just the land vehicles that are wildly better in there.com, and they have been better for over 20 years.

Ooh... now I want to try this place! Hehe, thanks for posting 😎

ETA, ya driving in SL and Open Sim is a real effing PITA. Sorry. Hoverboards are OK though, that's how I roll vehicle wise a lot of times... explains why I like flats and sneakers. :) Ok with wearing them even with a bombshell outfit, so I can hover.

You missed out on simboarding in SL, I looked around, I guess it's totally dead. There were competitions for L$, all sorts of park features (half pipes, etc). They even had rails you could ride.

The whole thing is dead, I can't find one anywhere to buy in SL except for skins. All the old sims for it are gone, the groups don't look active either. I still have mine, it works just as well as the There.com one looking at the video. I think it's one of the better "vehicles" I've driven in SL too. It was pretty big around 2012.

Discuss.

Second Life is a niche market, but has There any significance at all?

EDIT:

That's neat. Not too different from hoverboarding other than the height.

Arrr... somebody resell these please, I'd be willing to buy one for umm... L$50? Even if it looks like a leftover plank from Home Depot, doesn't matter!

Pretty sure there were a few available on one of those other grids. Joe and/or Hyacinth come to mind.

And didn't There.com close back in 2009 or 2010?  I remember talking to people back then who said they were coming over to SL because it was closing.

Not from Open Sim... SL.

Oh sorry, I was under the impression you had accounts in multiple places. My bad.

I do, four of them in Open Sim. But I wanted that old board from SL, the one that was pointed out earlier. :)

ETA, the one Flea pointed to.

They did close, but then they reopened.  I haven't gotten around to trying it again, yet, but you can create an account at there.com, and the blog is still very active.  According to the latest post, "September has been a month of debauchery, daring sword fights, and countless hours spent at the local tavern..."

There.com gets a ton of things right.

Let start with those horrible avatars .. they look as terrible today as they did 20 years ago. Cartoons don't age like milk, unlike literally everything we do.

They have very capable physics and combined with good netcode and low latency means its a far more visceral experience than here. Your avatars has a connection to the ground and doesn't feel like its moonwalking. They also have pets, vehicles and paintball, all of which are well ahead of anything we can do here in terms of pace, feel and polish. Their engine is far more "game" like.

Let's not forget, There.com was the platform that got military contracts.

Which is why they folded when those contracts ended .. and then came back and have been back ever since.

What's not good ..

The creator economy is a joke, everything must pass moderation, options are limited, it's not a sandbox world like SL. Back in the eraly days my SO at the time was able to make a little money before switching to SL because of There's financial struggles. SL was very much seen as the crappy virtual world because it was empty, laggy, and slow .. and that was back when we had only basic avatars. There.com users came here because this was the only other choice (a phenomenon that would be repeated when Myst closed).

Those great paintball guns .. yeah, you have to buy the ammo.

The club scene (when functioning) is better and more lively. There are drastically fewer venues, but there can be more people at a venue and the people can do more. You wont be lagged or wishing your monster PC was more monster (low poly cartoon avies for the win).

In world moderation is poor, especially at clubs on voice .. for all the same reasons that Linden shut down the voice hubs (thanks edge lords reading CSAM!).

I didn't expect an actual serious response to this thread. Thank you.

That does not surprise me, no offense intended.

On the other hand, Coffee's glowing review of "anything but SL" isn't a surprise!

ETA: The more outlandish the post, the more people will "come out of the woodworks" in support of it. 🙂

What .. I was active on There.com .. I came here for the Linux client, everyone else I knew stayed because even back then, this place had a harsh reputation for being janky, empty, cold and lonely. All things it's still very capable of.

When There.com was struggling, more people I knew back then went to Habbo than here.

We lost to pixel racism (see pools closed) for all the same reasons we don't grow today. SL was hard and janky in every-way it shouldn't be.
