i cant seem to fix my avatar?

If you are in the official Linden Labs Viewer 2, you need to log out and then when logging in again you need to choose "Advanced" from the drop down menu. This will give you control over all the options SL offers (well most anyway  as some third party viewers have extras).   From the advanced menu you can change your shape, buy clothing and skins (the outer look of your avatar) and do most anything you want to do.

If you are not in the official Viewer 2, then please expand on your question by going to Options and Edit Answer from the drop down menu by your post.

Assuming your shape is modifyable, you can edit your appearance step by step, yes. You can play with sliders first for the head and click save when you're done. Then torso, legs, eyes, etc, one by one, repeating the process. When you are satisfied with the whole result, click the "save outfit" button at the bottom left of the "edit appearance" window and name it in a way you can remember it easily. It will create a subfolder in the clothing folder of your inventory where your shape and skin will be saved including your modifications.
