So once again, the Lindens have come up with a dozen featured "Community Exhibitions". And while it's good they are now expanding them and going beyond their original child-centric bunch, once again they are bland/boring/featuring their friends and play to this ancient, persistent idea that Second Life is a world for nerds and creatives only, who want to code and learn Blender, and for mainly men (sports like wrestling, although yes, I realize there are women wrestlers) and various helpful and nice NGOs -- but not the sort of thing people go to for entertainment in the evenings when they have free time. It's like the "Better Worders" committee came up with that list.

So the Lindens will go on doing what they do, but in the infohubs where I have some say, namely Ross (an old Linden land turned resident-run hub) and Iris (the Moth Temple, where we have adjacent land), I have my own boards with things like "Where are all the people?" (newbies often ask that) with recommendations of clubs and shopping -- they get outdated. And other "fun" or "interesting" places.

So here's my list for now, all non-commercial and all G and M and job one -- get rid of this stultifying term "Community Exhibitions". For one, any use of the term "community" in the context of SL is a) oppressive and b) in fact not all-inclusive. "Oppressive," because it's the notion of commuuuunity held by Linden Lab and their close friends and featured people and b) there are numerous separate communities even in this rather small concurrency of some 30,000-40,000 people tops -- which is less than you would find in the three giant government subsidized and private housing complexes where I live in Manhattan. But SL is saved from being a small town because it is international, thank God, so I would draw on that way more than they do.

Accordingly, this is my list of 14 FUN AND INTERESTING PLACES. It reflects my own personal interests and my own personal friends and even my own places, just like the Lindens' do, and I see nothing wrong with that! You make a list, too. Let's see what we get!

ART (why have the Lindens left out this category, and even their own sponsored SLA?)

Summer Camp by Cica Ghost - regular exhibits

Artsville and Art Korner (Group) (M) - changing art exhibits, dances and DJs

Petite Industrial Art Gallery (M) - changing art exhibits

Cloud Galleries - Corsica South Coast - regular artists in art and events community

LIVE MUSIC (why have the Lindens left out this category?)

Warehouse 21 (M) - DJs, alternative, underground

Mystery Station (G) - Alazarin Mobius - live, original progressive space rock in multi-storey outer space build

Billybob's Underground DJs and live covers

ROLEPLAY

Mieville - Steampunk, all welcome, art, hangouts, shopping events, hunts

The Wastelands (M) - apocalyptic RP, no costume required, free salvaging and combat

HANGOUTS

Blogging Outpost (M) - BBB stamp, writing hangout with chatGPT characters for inspiration

Poesy Wildes - immerse yourself in the world of literature

INTERNATIONAL (the Lindens finally put one in -- Germany; more are needed).

     JAPANESE

Hiraya Town - town, shopping, shrines

  RELIGIOUS

     Native American Church (M)

     Ross Mosque (G)

None of the community exhibitions at the Welcome Hub are child centric nor can I recall any that have been. No Starries, no Nuggets, no Mischief Managed, no major schools or shopping events. You won't find us represented in any official media either and if we are it's exceedingly rare. I certainly can't think of any examples.

I'm confused really, I'm not sure how you can say they're child centric when they've never been that.

Like those town notice boards you get you know?

A few places have those. Woodcrest University has a good one at their entry point. It shows events in the near future, and events scroll off once they're over.

Um, look at the list, the very first one. Complete with child avatars representing them.

Maybe if all those other communities APPLIED to be in the community exhibitions, we'd have some of them included?

No. That's not the solution. I personally would never apply and would never be accepted, nor would I be picked unilaterally.

The Lindens do the picking, even if there are applications, and it's always one sort of group that gets picked, like a combination of 4H Club and AV Club.

With all due respect, Prokofy... I feel that you're simultaneously demanding that Linden Lab do a better job here and stating that it'll never happen because it's all one giant fix-up? Or is the purpose of this discussion merely to restate that Linden Lab Cannot Do Anything Right and Second Life Is Doomed?

Personally, I'm inclined to see a more practical explanation for the lack of representation from across Second Life in the current iteration (emphasis there) of the Community Exhibition space — namely, that it's currently just the one region, and the Lab want to provide exhibitors with sufficient space to showcase what they do.

It's really hard to tell when someone just wants to "vent", but at the same time they phrase it as if they are either "blaming" LL or expect LL to "DO" something, but still reject any ideas..

I think you need to go back and re-read my original post.

Yes, I am criticizing LL's job, that's my job.

You do criticize your government in RL, right? And don't fan up your government, no matter how liberal and democratic?

No, I am not asking them to accept MY list or anybody's alternative list on their stage. As noted, I wouldn't go if asked nor would I advise others to do so.

What I am promoting is the idea of MAKING AND PUBLISHING YOUR OWN LIST.

Post it on your own venue. Help newbies with alternative lists.

Think of what is fun and interesting for lots of different people and post it.

The Lab has 12; I put 14 just because that's what I happened to have readily from having visited the spaces recently.

The exhibition by the Lab could have miniaturized versions of their sites or just a few symbolic elements. Yes, that's prims.

I used to have a big arch in Ross called TOP LOCATIONS or something. I would pick them every two weeks. It got to be a lot of work, plus the big arch took up scarce prims on my place there. I do have a modest fence with ads for other newbie help centers, international sites, etc. and I rotate through the stores there -- but I never keep it up, my bad.

So what I think I'll do now is find a mesh arch that takes up less prims and put this card I've made -- plus any others people come up with -- and put it in a giver. I may or may not update it, what can you do, RL intervenes.

We applied two times but, until now, no response for Linden Lab or Moles.

We are a spanish language community, member of Community Gateway Program.

I don't know why we didn't receive a response.

The Phase 1 List? Bay city ? That isn't a child centric community. There are child avatars who are a part of the community but it's not centered around child avatars.

The Virtual World Eduction Whatever? That isn't kid centric. None om the list are kid centric. There maybe kid avatars that are there but they aren't centered around kids.

You're being incrediby obdurate and clearly missed the original discussion about this and/or have some kind of agenda and axe to grind.

MULTIPLE - REPEAT MULTIPLE AND NOT JUST ONE - of the exhibits featured child avatars representing them. That indeed "signals" very loudly, whether you wish to admit this or not. Especially if there is an adult, X-rated or M-rated LGBT sim where appearing underage is an entire sport with its own terms etc.

So stop it with the persistent annoyances here. If you put child avatars out to represent something, don't them start crying like indeed a baby tht you aren't child-centric and have nothing to do with kids, the end. The entire recent scandal was around this theme and honestly, the Lindens even know better now, and you should, too.

People who use deliberately blank inworld profiles for posting here do not deserve to be taken seriously on any point. I stand by my remarks with an inworld avatar that PS is connected to a RL name on social media.

I asked thee both times I wasn't able to go in world and see which ones you were talking about. I looked at the first one on the list.  Alli was doing was asking for clarification because to me for something to be considered kid centric then 70% or more of the community/sim/whatever would have to be centered around kids. And not just something where there are kids. .

There is a difference. For example Shop and Hop has stores that sell exclusively to kids however I would not call Shop and Hop a Kid centric event. To me kid centric would be something. Or take Caledon I know there are kid avatars who participate in that but I wouldn't consider it to be kid centric.

I have no idea what you mean by avatars with blank profiles because that isn't me. If you are having trouble finding my avatar it's: millywh.resident. As for using your RL name attached to your avatar...lots of people decide to do that. Because of the rarity of my RL name and an uncomfortable situation that happened early in SL I do not attach my RL info to my SL.

I am finally able to go in world and look at the Community Exhibition and I've seen ONE image of a child avatar in a picture of people sitting around listening to someone.  I think it was a child avatar. And that community has both G and M rated sims.

I found 7 of the exhibitions had images of SL avatars at all.

Maybe the exhibitions have changed since you were there but I looked around and had to really look to find a child avatar represented.

The child avatars were there IN PERSON in the exhibits, derp. Just because you didn't see them doesn't mean they weren't there. Your persistence on this topic reveals your agenda.

You don't have a list of 12 places to recommend?

1. LL does a poor job of representing the diversity of their own platform because of their own persistent ideologies, upheld by their rabid fan base on the forums.

2. It's fine to criticize LL in this regard and suggest alternatives, and so I do.

3. You don't have a list of 12 places to recommend?

I don't have an agenda other than trying to figure out what communities you think are child centric when none of the ones at the Exhibition advertise themselves as being child centric. I didn't realize you meant avatars there at the time and it's not hard to just be clear without being combative.

I'm on my lunch break at work so I'm not in world. And I was getting together some places I'd recommend but several are already on the Destination Guide and I wanted to focus on things that weren't on the Destination Guide.

I'll add some tonight although it won't be a full list of 12 because I've been busy and will continue to be busy in RL

By the way I did check out a couple of the place you listed that I hadn't been to before.
