Offline Second Life messages

I would like to see being able to leave messages to people when signing on thru here the web so that if we are unable to log into the viewer we can leave a message to friends here

If everyone actually checked the forums now and then, it'd be easy to do it here; just send them a PM. Unfortunately, most people I mention the forums to have no idea any of this is even here. Or that there's a wiki, either.

I think it's kind of why so many people are just using Discord now to keep in touch when they aren't inworld.

there's a phone app in development, all premiums can already use it.

but on all devices, you'll have to log in first.

Yet another thing I was very resistant to, but ended up being pleasantly surprised by. Discord is so efficient, and a great way to stay in touch with friends when you can't be in SL. You can even switch between different devices without losing parts of the conversation. Very cool. I recommend it.

Look at the Radegast viewer on the TVP directory. It's a text-based viewer. It has an optional renderer that doesn't really work. But it's perfect for logging into SL to chat with friends if that's all you need it for.

Firestorm also has a text-only mode that many are unaware of.  It gives you all the chat, group, friends list, etc. of Firestorm but just doesn't render any graphics:

And don't forget Speedlight. It's a phone app (it can be accessed in a web browser too). It keeps the avatar logged in for up to 6 hours even after closing the app. It is good for inworld communications and even sends messages to the phone when the app is closed and the avatar is logged in.

Ya, that one feels like it loads everything, but they put up like a pink wall to block anything you see in the graphics.. You can still even see your avatars tag over their head through the pinkness..

Well mine was pink anyways.. that may just be a color from some setting of mine. hehehe

For some reason, nobody uses the "Send offline messages to emails " like I do. 20 year accounts are like " What the heck is this weird message you sent me? " when I reply to their SL messages from my email.

 

Of course that requires a previous message to reply to though.

How bizarre, you are right but that's not how it used to be.  It must been broken with the v7 upgrade.  In the past when I used it, the screen was completely black, no avatar name tags onscreen, just the chat/group/friends floaters.

I do, I expect quite a lot of people do really.  I know of a handful of people who do.

Often, if I IM a creator about an issue with a product, they'll send me a reply while offline.  Just another one of those things I thought everyone knew.  I've replied a few times to offline from  my email as well.

I just used it for the first time like last week or the week before.. I was just looking at all the different viewer styles options they had in Firestorm.. I never used a text viewer otherwise.. hehehe

This is exactly how I conducted all customer service during the 12 years I was inactive. Some people are so bewildered when I reply via email to a message they sent, you would think I was a spirit communicating from beyond the grave.

I made the mistake of turning that on once, years ago, I went to bed, next day I checked by email inbox and

"You have received 793 messages from SecondLife"

 

When I'm in-world, if a group chat gets too spammy, i can close that window and its gone for the session, but sent to email, you get hours of group chat, and notices, from EVERY active group you are in.

 

So, no, I NEVER use "send offline messages to email". EVER.

I use it to log events from my lands.  Region restarts, etc.  Anything that goes to llInstantMessage() gets emailed.  Has been very reliable so far.

I’ve actually carried on long conversations with someone doing that. Not a great approach but I was at work and did not have access to SL.

AFAIK the send IM to email should only sends direct IMs from people, never group chats. I have IMs on and group notices off and I’ve never gotten group chat to my email.

i send offline messages to email but i never tried replying to them from there, it just didn't occur to me to talk to SL people in RL email -- that's some kind of black magic dimension mixing i think.  I do have a note to send me a notecard if i don't answer people because i don't read my email most of the time.
