Here's a "general" thread to bring up some scattered topics about "Changes in Second Life" or:

- What is now "In" that used to be "Out"?

- What is now "Out" that used to be "In"?

- What the heck are we talking about?

Snark, humor, and disagreement are more than welcome, but I'm hoping we can get some nice points about the recent "changes".

To get started..

What's in: 2K textures, PBR, AI, the next "LH Theme"

What's out:  Tillia (SOLD! by LL..), Blueberry

..What are we talking about?  PBR, glTF, AI, Communications from the Lab (or lack of), Spicyness..

Recently ive noticed there are a surprising amount of people complaining about PBR and at this point in SL's lifespan, if your computer cant handle PBR textures its just outright time to upgrade. Its been time to upgrade for at least a decade. I play this game on an actual toaster and have yet to see PBR impact my performance in any meaningful way.

For the weirdly large audience of people who are running 10+ year old integrated graphics on mid tier macbooks and stuff, its time.

What's Out: Windows versions prior to 7

(Versions before a certain year won't run some parts of the modern installer, from what I saw..be it Python or something else.)

What's In: Windows 10/11

I dont think Vista or XP have been able to run a functional viewer without some extremely tedious workarounds for a few years. I used to run SL on XP/Vista with the legacy viewers but they stopped working in i think 2021.

I havent tried to see what still works on 7, might try that later. I run windows 8.1 with up to date firestorm without issue though. Honestly anything is better than windows 11 at this point.

I have a good computer that is about 5 years old and a fast broadband connection. SL worked very well on the standard LL viewer until the PBR viewer was introduced. With the PBR viewer, rezzing went very slow, so that in a club with more than 15-20 avatars, it took 10 mins or more for everything to rez, if I was lucky.

Even setting my graphics to minimum gave little or no improvement.

I now use the Alchemy viewer and performance is good. Things rez reasonably quickly (in SL terms!).

So I think the problem is more to do with the PBR viewer (possibly not the PBR itself but some other alteration). I definitely don't want to splash out money on a new computer only to find that the LL viewer (and Firestorm, apparently) don't work any better on it!

Oops! I put "Windows 10" and should have put "Windows 11"! I'll edit. Thanks!

PBR has been around a while in the CG realm, almost 20 years I think, maybe longer! My GTX 1050 laptop with 4 GB of VRAM actually handles it well enough. The one time I maxed out PBR settings recently was at the newest Akimitsu sim that uses PBR throughout. It helped that nobody else was there, but I was getting about 15-20 FPS on average. Not too bad, considering how graphically intense that sim is.

I took a nice bunch of pics there, one for the general audience in a fish tank, and a midnight movie take for mature audiences in the orangey forest cube. If you haven't been there go to it soon before it's gone!

What’s in - The most arse-about-face implementation of PBR in the history of the Metaverse.

What’s out - Hopefully the person who was in charge of it.

We’ve addressed this one allot. PBR Theory is 2004, practical implementation is 2013.

In: Complaining about new SL issues

Out: Complaining about old SL issues, which I assume means replacing Prims with Sculpties, Windlight with EEP, and System bodies with Mesh.

Always "In": Get off our lawns!

WRONG!

First ever game to feature any version of PBR... 2013

20 Years ago, all PBR was, was a BOOK suggesting that it *could* be used in Hollywood Minutes-per-frame CGI SFX.
