Cancelled my membership after nearly 20 years - cause of PBR Viewer Graphics issues

It's not. EvoX uses 2 UV maps, each 1024, instead of the single one Evo uses. 2K equivalent would be four UV textures. But true 2K would be a single texture .

That's not how UVs work. They can have any resolution of texture used with them. However, one thing I can say for sure as of right now (21/10/2024) is that 2k textures don't work with BoM and therefore if the skin they're advertising has a BoM version, it won't be 2k.

That's why 2 textures are used with EvoX.

Not exactly, EvoX only uses 2 textures because they split the ears off into a separate UV. So when the beta testing for 2k BoM is done, they will be able to have a 2k texture for the face and a 2k texture for the ears (if they want), though I wouldn't think thats needed. 2k for the face and 1k for the ears should be plenty. Realistically with the ears being where they are and the size they are relative to the head, I'd personally use a 512 for the ears and only push it to 1k if the face is 2k (when BoM is updated).

Every autumn I go to Burn2, the SL counterpart to the real world Burning Man festival. This year there seem to be a lot less people there and fewer installations. Could this be because of the poor performance of the LL and Firestorm viewers? In fact, there's been almost no lag and rapid rezzing at Burn2, presumably because of the scarcity of people.

When the LL viewer went pear-shaped last winter (when PBR was introduced), it became unusable for me and I switched to Alchemy. It's probably not until Firestorm also suffered a performance drop that the problem became widely known in the SL community.

You know, I heard about this year's event maybe a week ago, once, and then completely forgot about it. I remember when I was new, it was promoted way, way more, and practically rivalled the SL Birthday celebration. Even I, a total newbie, had a little thing on the Playa. That was back when senior Lindens (e.g., Philip) would routinely attend RL Burning Man, though.

It hasn't been like that for a long time, but announcements about this year's event seemed exceptionally few and far between, at least to me.

Just riffling through this thread, I don't see mention of "Aditi", the test grid where 2K BoM has been in testing for about a month for those who want to play around with it. As an update, from this week's Simulator User Group:
