Hiding group member list/names

Asking out of curiosity ... I've seen groups where the names of members/member list can not be seen by basic group members. I have two groups (one for my gallery, one for my male alt and me to build) and have never seen how to do that in the group settings?

Any help appreciated.

I believe it only opens up as an option after a certain number of members, I think this is what I remember anyway.

Would be nice if it was an option for all, can't really see why it's restricted this way.

I’d honestly love it if it was default for all groups. Basic group members don’t necessarily need to see entire membership list, last login data, member status etc. for all other group members.

This would make for a great feature request.

It's not actually an option tied to membership numbers, IIRC.   It's just that SL will not load the members' list after a certain number.  I have no idea what that number is, however.

A list of group members will not be shown if that group has more than (I think) 5000 members, LL imposed this a while ago.

Well that makes it even worse. I couldn't quite work out the reasoning behind the 5000 (apparently) members causing it to be hidden thing other than thinking it was maybe because large groups pretty effectively break the whole already pretty useless "appear offline" friend function but it turns out it's just a result of 5000 records apparently being too much for the server to handle?

Sounds about SL. Should be a basic feature of any group, there's very obviously scenarios where people may want a hidden membership.

Originally, groups were tied to land permissions.  It was all about land so having 5000 members wasn't anticipated.   That they have morphed into what they are today doesn't mean LL updated that system.  Hence, why group chat fails quite often.  It wasn't the intended use as a chit chat option with 50000 people wanting to be heard.

Okay the mystery only grows! they just ignored how people came to use the feature? Sounds about SL again

I don't know if they ignored it but they certainly haven't found a way to fix it as the systems stands now.  Unless they did a complete overhaul of Groups, I doubt they even know how to make it work now.  Oh well.
