Try "Beginning GIMP from Novice to Professional" by Akkana Peck. 

 

I got mine about 4 years ago from Amazon.com (about $30.00 USD).  Without that book I most likely would have given up on texture or clothing creation for SL.  I think it was written for GIMP 2.4 at the time.  I know it's still very relavant for 2.6 (the version I now use) as I refer to the book often.  The book might be updated from the time I bought mine.
