No, that's what YOU perceive as the new user experience. How many of those "some" people who were so "lost" that they never made it out of the landing circle have you talked to to actually find out what's going on with them? You actually have no clue what's really going on in these areas. You don't know who is an alt and who is not. Who is a bot and who's not. Who is currently being talked to by a mentor or helper. Who is having network issues and who is not. And this isn't your first negative post with those kind of "observations" and YOUR interpretations about the welcome area. You could at least start talking to people so we get some more substantial information to discuss next time.

I know everyone here is super well-meaning, but not everyone wants to be greeted by chat when they're first experiencing a game. Some do, and they should have access to mentors / greeters / Torley. Personally, though, if I'd had an oldbie descend upon me when I first arrived, no matter how charming and earnest they may be, I'd have logged out and deleted the app instantly.

Newcomers need to feel welcome in their own way of being welcomed, so the environment must first make it as automatic as possible for them to discover and pursue that tailored path.

So, no offense to all the good intentions, but I know as a newbie I wouldn't want to be talked to, and I also know if I talked to newbies now I'd be doing nobody any favors. The newbies need to want it, and the people talking to them need to be supremely skilled at it.

Now, as far as knowing what's really happening in the welcome hub: Maybe mentors could tell us their personal experiences but I'd much rather see some numbers. Of course that should be the Lab's best guarded secret sauce, the key to their future dominance of all competitors, but… yeah. We all have no objective idea what's really happening, and no practical way of discovering it.

as there's nothing in your post to contribute to the subject, what's your point to discuss?

My point of discussion is that people like you "Aren't the mentor programms running anymore?" "If the new program doesn't work again, skip it" are fighting a war against the welcome hub based on what they see and their interpretations of what they're seeing which is again influenced by what they want to see. My point is that many of the complaints/arguments are unsubstantial because there was no attempt to figure out what's really going on. Better?

My concern is yes, there's an SLRR near the welcome hub. Yes, there's demo homes near the welcome hub. But not near enough. I'm years old and have visited the hub many times and I wouldn't know where to find 'em. Gotta make them easier to get to, for a brand new resident. Is all I'm saying.

I've figgered it out in a blinding flash. The new resident steps off the landing zone and all that's there is a subway station with three platforms. And auto shuttles going to 'demo homes' 'SLRR rail depot, casino, passport office and so on. (Yes the passports are weirdly popular even i like collecting the stamps and I'm not the stamp collecting type.)

Why not ? The trick is to blinker the new resident so they're not overcome. Small steps. Limit choices. Make new choices a reward. "Congratulations. You can walk. Would you like to drive a car now ?"

No. Belay that. " Would you like a wearable bicycle ? Add it to worn from Inv"

The only time I say hello to someone new at the hub is if they say Hello first.  I still hate being greeted when I arrive somewhere so I just don't.  The one exception is if they walk right up on me and stand there so I'll say Hi.  Wouldn't want them to think I was a NPC!

On the topic of greeters I avoided bringing this up yesterday because I didn't want to name and shame people by posting about it as it was happening.

I observed during part of the day yesterday there were two mentors standing either side of the orientation arrow, right where the gate was.

image.thumb.png.5f573d33a0808539dc227fc5c54f1490.png

Roughly where they were standing. They were both looking inwards towards the orientation.

Probably if you're an extrovert you don't see the problem... But this might as well be like building a solid wall across the gateway. To an introvert this basically looks like an ambush, two people waiting for you to dare to cross their path. They're never going to walk through. In fact in my shyer days I probably wouldn't have dared to move from the little circle whilst people were staying at me like that, fearing it would trigger a helper to come rushing forward.

I think it would have been better to stand off to the side or maybe even inside the help booth, to signal you want people to approach them, rather than they are going to approach you.

I wouldn't want to walk past those people, they may want to talk to me.

LL have stated, as part of their 2024 "roadmap" that they want to design and deploy Artificial Idiocy based "Mentor Bots" to Noob Island.

That STRONGLY suggests that LL have begun to realise that Mentoring Programs just DO NOT WORK.

Do bots response when YOU talk to them?

One previous "Famous Forum Idiot" used to boast that if he teleported somewhere and an avatar said "Hi" in local, he would auto-block them because...

FilthyBot!.thumb.jpg.2261244f9f8e61d74b49b6e7ae055975.jpg

Then he'd make another post complaining that none of the blocked people ever spoke to him, and that all the blocked people who never spoke to him were...

Can you guess? Donald Sutherland knows the answer...

Haha...I'm the same. When I first arrived in SL I even flew off from the orientation before reading a thing. I do try to keep in mind I might be in the minority though.

However, I explored the welcome center recently with an alt and felt "attacked" by a mentor who persisted in messaging me and attempting to friend me. I actually logged off just to dislodge him even though I hadn't quite finished exploring the area.

Looking back I know I should have just said "thanks, but I like exploring by myself" and went on my way....but sometimes it's difficult to set boundaries right in the middle of interactions.

I would run for the hills if a greeter approached me while I was already disorientated and overwhelmed with new stuff, i couldn't deal with a social interaction at the same time!

However, I do know that this is just what some people want and need.

Suppose we design a new user experience that unintentionally selects for extroverts.

Or introverts.

So we create one online culture that's all extroverts, and another that's all introverts.

These both seem like dystopian Social Psych experiments from the 1960s.

Any type of intimacy with others is an art form, and you have to first know your own patterns and how others might have different ones, to interact successfully.

Just imagine if you were new, and there were the "usual suspects" chattering away about nonsense in VOICE, with weird gestures, etc.!!!!

Idea: A hotkey that turns off all sounds / voice, and changes your entire HUD area to be completely black!

Bonus if it also "locks" your avatar so you can't be pushed (or even bumped).

You may be on to something here. It's like in a store, I do NOT repeat NOT want a clerk to come up and ask me if they can help me -- I don't want them to wait a discreet moment and ask me; I don't want them to lurch over when my daughter and I are pawing through sales racks looking for our sizes. I want them NEVER TO COME OVER, EVER. Stay behind the register and ring up the sales please so there's no line, thank you.

Or the hovering water bearers in some restaurants that refill your glass when it is a tiny smithereen empty, as if playing Water Glass Jenga. I literally have tipped some waiters like that just to GO AWAY while we're eating and LEAVE US ALONE. Azerbaijan has the worst form of such waiters who STAY if you tip them and try to fill your glass MORE.

I would like to land in a world or game, struggle through whatever Second Life obstacle course or Myst maze they have created, and either leave or die, with NO Game Wizards, Mods, Menters, Helpers -- anyone at all. I was all set to enjoy Philip's game, forget what it was called (and it doesn't exist any more) but those hovering helpers in the WA just drove me away. They wouldn't let me struggle in peace. Thanks in advance.
