Why the bejeezuz didn't someone tell us that before? Now it makes sense. (Sort of. What's a UDP packet, anyway?)

Logging in to SL...

Client: Hi, my user is logged into your region at position X.Y.Z facing in direction D, with draw distance R, what can they see?

Server: Your user can see: Lara mesh body UUID blah-blah-blah-blah, with textures Brand Somesuch Skin, UUID blah-blah-blah-blah [ this continues for some time ]

Client: Oh right, I'll check my disk cache for those things, and any I don't have locally, I'll stream from the content Delivery Network!

Those are UDP packets, without them, SL simply doesn't work. The actual textures and meshes, however, are downloaded via http from completely different servers.

And just about every dev from Firestorm and Catznip and Black Dragon and Cool Viewer has mentioned that the "bandwidth slider" doesn't affect http asset fetching, only UDP packets, many many times over several years, usually in response to :

"I'm a leet gamer who THINKS they know everything about PC's, and why is the bandwidth slider limited to 3k, when I have Faster Than Light Tachyon based Subspace Galactic-Net! It's not 2003 any more Youu're limiting my Internet!"

Yeah because we know how up front the Lab is with that sort of information. Likely buried deep within some wiki they don't know the location of.
