Yes, you abandon your little Linden home.  You can purchase a 512sqm parcel and put anythin you like on it (within the ToS) of course.   You can purcahse a 1024sqm parcel and only pay tier for 512sqm (if you need the space and prims.)

If you do this transaction under a group, however, you will only get 10% of the 512sqm - as you can not put your 512sqm Linden free parcel in a group.

It must also be said that a 512sqm parcel comes with 117prims.  It does not incluse a structure (house, store) which will consume many of your prims.  The little Linden home comes with teh home and 117prims, enough to decorate.  Think everything through and read some of the wikis before you give up your little Linden home.

What Storm said is true...additionally if you buy a 512 and want it tier free make sure it is a mainland purchase.
