So some buy their way into the feted inner core but it is still a feted inner core.

Nope. There's no such thing, imo. It's just the imagination of one person. Anyone can buy quantities of sims from LL at quantity discounts. That's not been a secret. But a feted inner core, no. It's just one person's imagination.

That is exactly what a member of a feted inner core would say! ;)

Rolig said it best in the Peeve thread in regards to 'knowing' people and getting things done...

That's sort of the way RL works, for better or worse. My mom taught me, somewhat cynically, to make friends with the mechanic at the local gas station, the neighborhood cop, the mailman, the school janitor, the boss's secretary/assistant and anyone else who either knows how stuff gets done or knows how to find someone who does. You get better service if you already know someone on the other side of the desk.

As was also mentioned, when SL was smaller, I'm sure residents encountered Lindens inworld more often allowing them to forge some sort of relationship.  Over time, as employees have come and gone, it may be that less people belong to that group.

Do you think that anyone who has been in SL for more than a month or so is going to continue to be interested in "leveling up" by, say, walking 50k metres? Do you think that's going to be perceived as an accomplishment by most long-term residents?

There are people who have played MMOs for decades that will sit there for weeks trying to get their character to move one pixel to the left where the 'stand in the spot' achievement will ping. Even in games where you can't display your list of achivements.

In games where you can display them, there are always crowds of people who will parade around showing theirs off, and others who will use them to pick who gets to be in their 'cool kids' group.

People obsess over these things to an insane degree...

I'm very interested in the adult set of these achievements. I guess thats what INM is for.

Join the (Sl ut) Scouts.  I've seen women with stats from that group in their profiles.

I actually have two (now departed) Lindens on my friends list, Terrence and Blue. Back when I was on the Teen Grid and there weren't a ton of us, going to Linden office hours was one of my favorite activities. We all really enjoyed chatting with them. Not sure I'd call it a friendship, but even now when I Jeremy's picture pop up on knowledgebase articles, I smile because I enjoyed hanging out at his office hours back in the day.

That's quite an achievement:

1. One Linden on your friends list:     5000 XP

2. Two Lindens on your friends list: 10000 XP
