Non-binary people, what's your look?

I'm non-binary and carry that aspect of myself through to my second life. Before I recognized my gender, I thought it was just strange how I liked to mix masculinity and femininity in my avatar designs. Now that I'm more in touch with myself, I can firmly say that that expression is part of how I see my gender.

Since there's no such thing as "looking non-binary" because all NB people have different gender expressions, I'm curious what others outside of the binary gender look like in SL. Share a picture and tell me a little bit about why you choose to look that way.

My oldest avatar is pretty traditionally femme. She's looked roughly similar to this for almost as long as I've been in SL, just evolving to fit current mesh standards and styles. I sometimes struggle when shopping for clothing because I prefer to be more covered than less. I'd rather wear knee-length skirts or pants and high tops than the more revealing styles many shops make. She uses Maitreya Lara because I prefer a less curvy aesthetic and has stuck with the Lelutka Fleur head for a while.

My secondary avatar flexes back and forth between very soft masculine look and a femboy appearance. I always wind up putting flower crowns on him regardless of his presentation at the time and I've gathered a nice little collection of them over the years. He uses both Maitreya Lara with V-Tech or Flat chests and Belleza Jake. I'm sort of curious about the newer bodies like Aesthetic and how femme those can get but I'm waiting to see how they catch on before committing. His head was recently switched to Lelutka Zo, which is an awesome look.

Your avatars are all super cute and very well put together!

I'm gender fluid, but it would be impossible to post all of my looks here. I shapeshift pretty much daily - rarely human except for photos or lazy days, sometimes furry, often a frog, occasionally fantasy/dark fantasy, and currently building out an android, but I'll toss a few pics out there.

Just for reference, I wear Maitreya for feminine avatars, Legacy M (still waiting on a good Anatomy wardrobe!) for more masculine-primary looks, and occasionally V-Tech or Lara Flat if I'm really mixing things together. For heads - a variety. Lelutka, Catwa, BeSpoke (for fantasy), Happy Paw/SugarCult/Cerberus for furry, Akeruka...

Let me see...some of my more blended "I do wut I want" looks:

Eddy is the nonbinary one in my alt family. This is them as a young noob. They started life with the free Genus head and LucyBody because they were the cheapest stuff available for an alt who didn't plan to spend any money. (Those with OG avies know how well that turned out.)

 

Later they upgraded to Lelutka River head and Slink male body. They are wearing a female head skin with a male body skin and the full body tattoo is there to conceal the obvious neckline and differences in the two skins from 2 separate stores.

 

Then they got old and fat. Eddy is wearing Akeruka chubby head and Jake body.

I like mature Eddy better. He/They looks more like a real person to me.

One of my alts is nonbinary. I haven't taken a ton of photos and one of these is actually my main account.

I'm non-binary (though my avatar is more or less fully female nowadays, except for the facial hair).

Here's some earlier looks though, when I was more androgynous:

All those were "before the hormones". 

Now, my look is more like...

Although I did recently dress up as Graham Norton for a Eurovision-themed party...

Just realised I forgot to say why.

I started with a male avatar, though as an elf I always looked a bit more on the feminine side even when I wasn't trying (see below)

In around 2018 I decided to invest in Maitreya + V-Tech, so I could take advantage of a wider range of costumes for the weekly fantasy parties I go to.  And... I never looked back, and I've worn a male body on only a single handful of times since then.  I loved the more feminine look. Over the years, I gradually shifted more feminine. First I switched the V-Tech for Petite, then I dropped the chest mods altogether, the hormones kicked in, and nowadays I wear Reborn more then Maitreya.  My skin is a custom one I made myself, based on a male skin so I am still muscular, except with boobs. 

An I non-binary in RL? The jury is still out on that. Maybe. Probably. I don't think there are many gay guys who would have an avatar as feminine as mine if they weren't actually NB or even fully trans.  But I don't do anything about it. It's not really practical or possible in my RL situation. But it's a lot of fun to be different in SL.

As promised, dropping some pics here of my current look now. Rocking a VERY old full flexy hair by Magika ('Break', vanished from the store into the void unfortunately). Augmented with separate individually placed flexi strands taken from the Catwa 'Lee' hairstyle.

 

I've pretty much always done the partial elf look, and my tastes in styles and colors are many and varied. Just like @Ayashe Ninetails, I have a lot of shapeshift looks I wear when the mood strikes. Mer, android, kitsune, and vice versa. I lean more towards feminine nowadays; I still have so much difficulty trying to find a decent three piece suit (jacket, waistcoat, tie, trousers) for Maitreya + V-Tech. 😅

One of my alts, Casidy, is pretty much non-binary these days. He's an elf, based on one of my long-standing RPG/fiction OCs (I've been writing and roleplaying this character since 1993 - and just about to start a new D&D campaign with him). 

The tattoo is a newer thing; in SL he has the same one I do but in his canon he is not tattooed.

Magika has a lot of the very old styles all boxed up in a single package, in the mainstore, it might be in there.

For suits, I found that the best option with Maitreya + Vtech was simply to wear a mens suit, in whichever size was slimmest, and alpha out the whole body except for neck and hands. Slink male and Signature Geralt used to be the best fit but with those gone now, I suspect Legacy, or CZ Slim if you can find anything in that size, would look the best.  If you have long rigged mesh hair, you'll need to switch to a mens rig to fit with the suit, or else it will all be buried in the back.  That glittery Graham Norton suit I'm wearing up there is in Slink size on Maitreya.  I had to dial down my torso muscles and body fat a LOT.

What's much harder is finding a mens-style suit or tuxedo rigged for a female body with breasts.

Omg, this is the struuuuuugggggggle! 

If you're okay with taking an eraser to your entire body, going for full body alpha, AND tweaking your shape around the hips/butt (especially the width and saddle bags), you might be able to squeeze Maitreya into some Mazzaro suits. Play with the sizes. CZ Slim could work, and try Gianni. Jake is hit or miss, because of dat booty. 🤣 Jakes butt doesn't always play nice with Maitreya's and funny things can happen when you mix and match lol.

Native Urban is another place to try, but it looks like it might be one of those "buy the entire fatpack to get the pants" places, soooo, not the most budget of options.

The Kingsmen Suit from Hevo is a favorite of mine, as well. A bit older, and it's a turtleneck instead of shirt/vest/tie, but you can make it work in Jake's size.

As for some good news, on the fantasy side, I heard directly from the BeSpoke team that they will start making skins for flat chests as soon as possible (they're in the middle of some big updates and overhauls). As of now, all of their heads are unisex and they come with two full-body skins - one for male, one for female. They're working out a workflow to add a non-binary option for us flat mod wearers, too.

Now we just need suuuuuits!

Nonbinary leaning more towards agender these days, here i am! I enjoy animal and monster avatars because its easier to just go "my gender is nope" with scales or fur than with bodies that by design, skew towards certain gender markers.
