And yeah, it would be nice if this all lead to a native Apple (M chip) viewer. But the performance of the current viewer on the M series Macs is so much of an improvement over the Intel Macs, so I'm not complaining.

I agree, but think what the performance could be like with a native app :)

If the new code is integrated into the old code, yes, they do have to release any new proprietary code. The existing viewers are LGPL licensed. This is unusual for an executable program; LGPL is usually for libraries that you link into a larger program. If LL creates a viewer based on pieces of the existing viewers, they're stuck with licensing it under LGPL and making the code available.

Here's library code of mine licensed under LGPL 2.1. That's a little library for reading and writing LLSD (Linden Lab Serial Data). It supports the XML and binary representations of LLSD, but not the "notation" format, which isn't used much. Anyone can use that library freely. But if someone were to add support for "notation" format (which puppetry is using), they'd have to release the code for that. Preferably as a Github "pull request" to merge it into the main branch, which is how this is normally done today.

This is all pretty much settled and noncontroversial today. The open source enforcement lawsuits were years ago now.

Contributors grant LL a license which would allows LL to change the license in the future. There was actually some various issues in the distant past, which was part of the reason LL changed the license to LGPL from GPLv2. The current CLA for reference.

The license they release the code as is what everybody else can use it under. Internally their license is full ownership.

However, LL is just unlikely to do a restrictive license change as they are not arseholes.

Run it in beta - that's the best way to get it out to people. Charge $0.99 for the beta so you don't get slammed, let it go free for the first release to Premium users, and $5.99 for non-premium.

Something along those lines, but release it yesterday - you won't get better hype than a Beta release that shows some level of immediate improvement right after the first round.

I'm not paying for a viewer.

Great news Lindenlab be a wonderful feature to bring SL in tablets and phone:)

SL is already on tablets and phones with SpeedLight - both on Android and iOS :)

I predict this might be released in about two years, if then.  They can't even rollout features promised for premium plus (2048 Linden homes) in a timely manner.

I know people - especially PP members that expected a more timely arrival of the 2048 homes - are frustrated, but as Patch mentioned in one of the Linden Homes threads, there are completely different teams with different skillsets working on each project. And the 2048 timing was not a concrete promise. Given the delays that have happened at various stages in the Linden Homes development, I'm not surprised at all with the delay on the 2048 homes

if what was shown in the demo videos was actual working software (albeit not ready for release), I'm hopeful that we will get the SL mobile client by the end of the year. Maybe not all the features we'd like to see, but at least a functional client that runs on recent mobile hardware,  And one that will allow users to walk around, teleport, etc with beautiful Unity-powered rendering.

Also, anyone who expects this to run on old devices, old operating systems, or the cheapest Android tablet out there...that's simply not a realistic expectation.

Thanks for this, I already saw one question on a specific Android version level.

Ironically, as an iPhone user - if it won't work on anything before iPhone XXX ("XXX"= TBD), that will be a little unusual. (I still use an iPhone XS.)

EDITED to Add: I take that back. I just double-checked. I thought the XS was the mini model, but it's the model following the XR. My apologies! I don't know how many generations they will go back with the iPhone, but I imagine something like XR or later.

Personally, (and this is my web-developer-but-not-at-all-in-the-know-about-Linden-Labs opinion), I would not expect it to run on an XS. I'm not sure the user experience would be all that great even if it will run on it, due to the size and resolution of the screen.  I have an iPhone 13 with the larger, long screen that most Apple phones have had since XR, and I don't run a lot of games on it...I use an iPad for that (and other things).

i'm just hoping with sl being brought to ios it won't affect the adult content and communities on here. apple is really strict with adult/nsfw content.

Related reading: https://developer.apple.com/app-store/review/guidelines/#user-generated-content

Second Life has all of the requirements listed by Apple; a content-rating system, abuse reporting (maybe not speedy enough for Apple), blocking, and contact info.

It does say that "Apps with user-generated content or services that end up being used primarily for pornographic content ... do not belong on the App Store and may be removed without notice." So there is a chance that the viewer won't stay on the app store forever, unless they remove the 3D view. 😋

SL already has the content moderation ability to limit the iOS app from the app store to only accessing M or G sims. I expect the Android and iOS versions from the app store to only be able to access M or G sims with a direct download to an unlocked APK and iOS app on the SL website to access Adult sims. Marketplace can also already filter adult stuff too.

I kind of hope that's how it turns out, because if the mobile version is successful, it'll motivate people to make G and M sims and get away from SL being so sex oriented, which it's kind of developed a reputation for.

I'm curious how the mobile viewer will handle the purchase of user created items in general, given that the app stores get a cut of developer add-ons.

As far as the Adult stuff, there are plenty of people in SL for whom that is not a priority, and the release of the mobile viewer may increase those numbers. Or, mobile users could choose to just go about their adult-rated activities in the desktop viewers.

One issue I can see is that some skin shops are on adult sims

Only purchases made through the app (buying lindens with real money, specifically) would go to the platform. A regular user buying stuff in-world or on Marketplace with lindens wouldn't be subject to that rule (and it's a cost LL would eat -- prices would not be increased).
