They sent me a link to show me the message that sl sent them, but it wouldnt open. Should I be concerned that they were trying to get my information when I clicked the link?

Don't click links from anyone unless you know and trust them..

Also be careful of links in group chats as well.. A lot  of times if someone posts a bogus link in group ,most times people are pretty good at posting right away to not click those.. If you just see a link pop up in group ,wait until someone responds about it in chat to make sure it's ok..

DO NOT click that link. Its probably full of malware and they're using the "you're following me" line as a scam to get you to click it.

In fact, it might have "opened" already. Disconnect your computer from the internet and run a thorough virus scan right now.

I have recently received 2 of those same links that someone is following me.  One of them I know and the other I do not know.   I don't even know "how" to follow someone on SL and why would they do that???

Someone you know that you may not have spoken with  on that day ,could have had their account taken over because they clicked one of those links.. Now whoever or whatever is controlling the account could be going down the friend list to get more accounts to click that link to get control of more accounts..

The other person could be phishing to get you to click so they can do the same thing..

Always be leery of links that take you outside of second life coming from strangers or even friends acting out of character..

I don't click on links unless I know what they are..

You can't really follow someone "in" SL, except by constantly walking behind them, teleporting to everywhere they go etc. You know, the typical stalker-y type behaviours.  You can follow them here on the forum, and you'll get a notification every time they post. And you can follow their profile feed (or at least you could, I'm not sure if they've scrapped that yet).

But.. I think that as @Lewis Luminos and @Ceka Ciancihave suggested, this isn't about actually following, this is a scam to get you to click on a phishing link and then you'll lose your account (along with your linden balance and your payment info) to hackers. That person who you already know... I'll bet you a dollar that he/she already clicked, and now someone else is controlling their account.

You can still Follow people from the mysecondlife.com profile feed.  You used to get an email telling you someone was following you.  I shut off the feature to allowing following.

However, I don't recall if it also sent you a message inworld.  I'm going to try that today with an alt.

Yes, you still get a notification on the web profile that "Random. Avatar" is now following you.

If you go into your profile feed (my.secondlife.com) and click on "Friends" from the sidebar, there will be tabs for list of people you follow and for list of people following you.  You can turn off the ability for people to follow you in the Settings for the profile feed (and I think this may remove anyone currently following you, but I'm not sure about that).

So..if someone is following your Profile Feed...

No big deal!

Right?

Right, but...  why would you follow the profile of someone you don't know, and why would you not recognise them if they confront you about it?

a) because you clicked by accident; or because you follow people who's profile is interesting; or because you don't understand "follow" and thought it did something else.

b) because you were confronted for doing something innocent so it's easier to deny it (some people are that way); because you "follow" a lot of people (clicky clicky clicky) and don't remember this one dude/dudess who's all up in your face about it.

I'm good at this game!

Something I think is broken with Second Life atm.  I'm getting people saying they are getting notifications about my following them, and it's just people that used to be on my friends list at one point and now aren't.  Is the database screwed up now or something?
