If you are just double clicking the item, it might be defaulting to Wear instead of Add, so right click and choose Add.

0 Lindal Kidd
@Georgia Crystal, In your case, both your hair base and lip liner are tattoos, and LittleMe's suggestion for how to wear both of them is spot on. But here's the "too long, don't read" explanation. The avatar body can have many different texture layers on it, and now that we have Bakes on Mesh (BoM), these texture layers can be used by mesh body and head attachments, too. Each layer has its own specific inventory symbol. Layers include skin, system eyes, hair base (also sometimes called a brow shaper), tattoos, undershirt and underpants, shirt, pants, skirt, jacket, gloves and shoes. Also alpha masks that hide parts of you, and physics, which affects how your breasts and butt jiggle. Besides the texture layers, the other thing defining the look of your avatar is your shape, which is adjusted by the Appearance sliders. There are four of these items that every avatar must wear at all times: shape, skin, system eyes and system hair base. You can wear one and only one of each of these at a time. They don't allow you to use the Take Off command, but any of them can be replaced simply by Wearing another item of the same type. The Physics layer is not required, but it is also an item that you can only wear one at a time. All of the other layers permit the wearing of none, one, or multiple items. To wear more than one alpha mask or tattoo, just use the Add command as LittleMe said. "Wear" will replace every other item of that type with the new item. "Add" will add the new item, without taking off any of that type of item you are currently wearing. Layers stack one on top of another. For example, a Shirt will always appear over any Undershirt layer(s), and a Jacket over any Shirt layers. Within each type, the last one added will appear on top. Sometimes creators use layers for purposes you might not expect, for example using a tattoo for a colored hair base, as you found out. Or using a Glove layer to provide a manicure for system hands. Knowing all this about how the avatar system works can go a long way toward making dressing easier, but believe me, we all still make mistakes!
