This reminds me of Google's "Don't be evil". You'd think people would know better than to invite this comparison.

I just had a long chat with a neighbor who's a retired psychologist. One of the topics we covered was the need for increased emphasis on ethics and morality in computer science and technology. Big data and algorithms are, in some ways, like young minds. If we don't attend to the morality of their development (okay, even if we do), there will be consequences.

@Madelaine McMasters: Spelling out the websites name was reason for closure of a thread about this matter already. Better act as if they are Voldemort in Harry Potter. Not insinuating that they are evil, but that one should not mention their names either.

You may of course be correct, but not that LL has publicly (sort of) entered into an agreement with them, I think that discussion of what that agreement entails is probably ok.

That said, we do need to be careful not to wander off-topic.

So the topic is, we can opt out by using the SL IM system or use our email.  I'll pass engaging with the bot at this time, and let you all take it away and bow out for now.  I've really said everything I have to say in several threads so far.

Akshually, I like the idea that the BB's could IM us AFTER we opted out, confirming that they have indeed completed adding us to their "opt-out list".

Maybe that's just IMHO, of course.

There should not be an opt out, but a complete removal of all personal data and then they should start fresh again on their website with an opt in solution.
There would not be much  people profiles on display in the future, I guess.
Displaying those profiles is IMHO an useless exercise: The rest of world does not care and SL residents only can get peeved about it.
They proved the world that they can and that should be enough.

The other big issue making it "opt out" is the problem and drama now never goes away. The bots will be ever present and making sure all residents are informed an impossible task. We're going to be dealing with people discovering the bot net and the privacy violation over and over again for as long as the operation runs.

If LL were hoping for closure, this isn't that. This just hopes people are placated and forget.

Back on topic, I am still on their site after nearly four hours of opting out.  I imagine they are working out a few bugs, and eventually my profile will be delisted.  I do think this is entirely voluntary on their side, and such an opt out is not required so I will give them kudos for that.  I will not assume the intention behind BB, and say at the very least they are providing us enough transparency to know what information is being displayed on their site.  I think this mostly falls on LL, for allowing profiles to be so easily harvested from within SL.

I think if anyone posts defamatory profiles, photos or chat logs and harasses others in SL, that should be a form of cyber-bullying and not tolerated by any reasonable person.   I think we all should have the right to not be cyber-bullied.  Whether LL wants to do anything about it is another matter.  

There just is not one topic on this matter...so how to choose a general topic on this matter...I have no idea.  This harvesting has brought up many issues on our privacy, yet we can't talk about it.

It might be best discussed on reddit.com/r/secondlife/ or virtualverse.one where it is less likely to be locked out.  I'm not sure if SL would allow for us to create a thread on general account safety in SL, as to how to best secure our privacy, ways in which our data can be harvested, and how to best avoid being subjugated to miscreant behavior by others who would use such information against us.  So long as it stays on topic, I think it would be allowed, but one never knows.
