I do appreciate the advanced infrastructure in Bay City in terms of bridges and canals, but I think I like Shermerville's conventional highway markings and less Escheresque street layout for navigation on foot.  That said, the existing Shermerville area could use a cleanup on signage and reissuance of street names...last time I was there, two different previously contiguous but distant segments got folded together and rotated, leaving SL 50 intersecting itself twice on it's north-south alignment with two identically signed east-west spurs (it could work if the two east-west spurs got renumberd 50A and 50B, or if the 50 trailblazers were removed and planted to form a cohesive route again).

Thank you to all the Residents that have participated and read this thread so far...making it a red balloon (hot topic).

@Marianne /me waves.

@Osprey - hahaha zombies, that would of definately been fun but as long as teen users didn't suffer from e-Posttraumatic stress.

@Baloo - I'm not 100% sure but assume user restrictions (perhaps based on RL age) were enabled preventing general adult users into the teen grid and vice versa, even though we were all on Agni.

@Pussycat - I asked the same question, will the city transfer to Sansara like Teen Bay City, and at this time, it is unplanned and will remain as-is.

@Melita - although I sent an IM to each landowner (06-17) before posting this thread, I think 2 weeks should be enough time to reassess input, so lets say 07-01 for the street (unofficial) naming to close.  I understand your comments as to limit final voting to landowners but initially I was thinking of a community response as a whole as I'm not one for exclusion but have noted your concerns.  Sorry for not asking you regarding the city name, but I think you moved in during the second wave of land auctions and I can't access my home PC to check dates the city name IM was sent, but can confirm, no, this is not all me, I just jumped at the opportunity of being part of the beginning of a sub-virtual community, not to dictate or exclude but to be part of and going from memory some landowners that agreed with the Novatropolis name are Emma Starsider, Eric Carter, Breydon Lane, MGHG Spitteler, DT Zanzibar, Raophel Sosa.

@Nova Albion members - thank you once again for your participation the IM's I received have been informative and useful, especially surrounding the community aspect.

@Michael Linden - thank you once again sir for your recent rebuilding and repair work.

Once the city is repaired and at 100% resident occupancy my next project is a Resident Help Network Group (to be based within the city) so watch the forums if you are interested or would like to volunteer.

Happy Friday :matte-motes-nerdy:

Not the policy behind it, the technological means that were used that resulted in Agni hosting a segregated Teen section that was mutually inaccessible to the other side.  If this were the real world, the closest metaphor I can think of would be "I know why the Berlin Wall existed, but I don't understand it's design."

No opinion on the street names, but just thinking that Novatropolis might want to hype the fact that it's part of the all-General continent.  It's a tiny continent, to be sure, but much larger than Novatropolis only.

As much as it probably made sense to glue the TG Bay City sims to the west of the original MG Bay City, the downside was that doing so removed them from that all-G continent, so it's more difficult for it to retain "critical mass" of interest.

Of course, it may be that there never was interest in all-G content, other than that enforced on teens... but having a "predictable SL experience" vis a vis content maturity was the Linden party line, back when they herded all us pornographers off to Zindra.

If it turns out that there's not really much interest in an all-G continent, then Novatropolis will have difficulty restoring occupancy and supporting anything like the current land prices there.  It's double-primmed and there's infrastructure, so it's not going to revert to standard Mainland < L$0.5/sq.m. or anything, but... it's no Nova Albion either.

/me nods at Qie

Although I pondered the thought of a TSL continent community, which would include the city, it was not my intention of saying 'hey - over here, come visit..' to boost land prices (even though I think L$25 per sqm for 2x prim land is viable), but with the aspect of generating further resident awareness and hopefully to achieve a virtual community/neighbourhood experience not only with Resident input but also with Linden interaction, similar to the days of old..well what I've heard.

Personally I see Nova Albion as the big sister city (not the gatekeepers of Rapture type) and whilst our small community develops, believe we can learn from the original City Community and its Residents.

  • 3 weeks later...

What I'd still like to see is a community-wide group where everyone has an equal vote. Especially since this seems to have been put in motion before half of the parcels had even sold to anyone.

Someone declaring themselves de facto mayor/monarch is the type of thing that can get an American's back up. :P  Even if that wasn't how it was meant.

The fact that this was all begun when the continent was half empty, as you yourself said, Gamxor, betrays the fact it was a tad premature. At this point, has anyone else independent of being told "it's happening - better choose!" actually come up to anyone else and said "hey know what we need? road names."

Didn't Bay City name their roads only about a year ago, and then, wasn't it the Lindens who orchestrated it themselves? But it was well after Bay City had found its identity.

If one is to have a civic effort, the citizens of the city should be as one and not sort of told by one individual to hop on board, or else miss the train.

Form a resident group.

Search for these to see what I mean:

Blumfield-West Haven Resident Assoc

Bay City Alliance

Zindra Alliance

Nautilus City Alliance

Snooping in the Bay City one and the Zindra one will show you how to use this kind of group well or poorly. I'll let you figure out which one is which if it ain't obvious. ;)

Correct, our road naming in Bay City was an effort of our Residents, and happened some time after our community had developed roots. It was orchestrated by the community, though we obviously needed a Linden's assistance to place the signs and poles.

Nothing against a city/continent - wide group at all. Meetings...ugh. If I have to  ;p

Might want to invite Bay Citizens to the meetings, to keep it interesting. ;)  I've always found Bay City Alliance meetings to be something of a highlight to the week.

Can't quite say that for Zindra, though, so YMMV.

Which is quite sad, Zindra has so much more potential. But a lot of porno establishments with egotistical, "me first and me only" personalities dominate the continent.  Which is sad, the continent has some fine civil infrastructure, particularly in Bay City.  (Though a lot of these places would probably be better off with some kind of parking facilities even if it's a lot with autoreturn and a place to rez a car).

There's a lot to learn from Bay City and its governing group of residents.

I guess they'd be the Mayflower Compact and this new unnamed bunch would be...not sure yet :)

I agree Zindra is a pretty continent, or potentially could be. I haven't owned land or been in any Zindra groups though so I can't really comment on it.

  • 2 months later...

hello readers =)

yikes it's been over 3 months since the original post but i'm pleased to report that a rez zone has been installed and indicated on the map with a star.

i submitted a case (which is under review at the time of this post) to rez a suburban area, like Nova Albion has Shermerville, and although i don't wish for the world or am getting my hopes up about it...i've got my fingers crossed heheh.

i'm also glad to report that our/the city is at full resident occupancy now so hopefully we can revive the street and city naming project and start doing more community activities.

oh last thing to report, subject to Michael Linden's schedule, he has agreed to attend an inworld ceremony (in the city) to unveil a small plaque commerating the TSL and Main grid merge.

perhaps i could setup some land requesting resident involvment to create the content..i'm still working on the wording for plaque though..thoughts?

I would doubt they'd add a suburb like Shermerville. It's important to note that when Shermerville originally was created (as a "first land" project similar in vein to Nascera), it was not very popular. So much so that the original 9 regions of Shermerville were cut down to two (Blumfield and West Haven were already in existence and, essentially, a "beta" for Shermerville) .

Who knows, though. Stranger things have happened.
