Is there any way to talk to your frineds thru your dashboard without actually logging in world?

IM just wondering, I heard from a frined you can actually chat with your other firends from your dashboard without actaully being logged into SL.  Can this actually be done or are they refering to something different like SLite?  I would love to know if u can do it because I do not always have time to log in to SL.

You can download a free application called SLiteChat that will enable you to send IMs to people on your friends list. To them, you will appear as online in their lists.

As Venus says, you can use a text based client like SLite. It is not possible to talk to people from your dashboard. Check out the TPV page http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Third_Party_Viewer_Directory to see alternative viewers - also text based ones.

However, if you have set IMs to be sent to email, you can reply to the emails which will then be sent in world to the person who tried to IM you. The email link is valid for about 5 days, I believe.
