The absolute best way is to buy L$ with RL money.  Yes, there are plenty of ways to make money in SL by creating and selling things, dealing in real estate, being a DJ or a dancer, or whatever.  If you want to earn more than pocket change, though, it takes a lot of work and you earn much less for the time and effort than you would if you had a minimum wage part-time job in RL.  And you'd be spending all your time working when you could be relaxing and having fun. 

You don't need very much L$ to survive in SL anyway.  The world is full of good-quality free things, and even the things that aren't free are really inexpensive.  The exchange rate for USD to L$ hovers around 4/1000.  You can buy yourself a new shape, excellent quality skin, great hair, and several outfits for just about what you'd pay for lunch in RL. So skip lunch once a month, bring the money in world, and enjoy yourself.

There are also job ads in world which you can see in the classifieds.

Another way is to enter contests that give lindens as prizes.  You can find these using search and "events"

If you are less than 30days old you can also search for money trees - I think there are still a few around.  There are also a few camping spots still in existance which will pay you a small amount for just hanging around.

If you have a content creation skill you can make items to sell on the Marketplace or rent a shop to sell them inworld.
