When people report that sort of thing, it usually turns out that they didn' really "buy" L$ at all.  They placed an offer to buy L$ at a specified price, using the Limit Buy option. When you do that, your offer will sit there until one or more other SL residents accept your offer and sell L$ to you at the price you quoted.  If you set an unreasonable price, it could take a long time (or it might never fill).

ETA: When you place an  offer to buy, Tilia will open an escrow account and will charge your payment method (credit card or PayPal) for the amount of the anticipated purchase. The money will sit in that escrow account until the sale is completed (or until you cancel the offer).  If you do cancel the offer, the money is transferred from the escrow account to the USD balance in your Tilia account.  You may then use that balance to pay for a future L$ purchase or to make other payments (like your Premium membership fees or any land purchases), or you can request a credit transfer to have it sent to your PayPal account.
