Happy Canada Day!  I will have to look up whether this is some kind of independence celebration.

Until then, I'll congratulate you guys on your hockey and general politeness.   Those are the only Canada stereotypes I can think of.

It is a celebration of the anniversary of Confederation, in 1867, when three British colonies, Canada (then, just what we now call Ontario and Quebec) united with New Brunswick and Nova Scotia to form a new country, mostly independent of Britain. I say "mostly" because Canada's foreign policy continued to be dictated by the UK until the Statute of Westminster in 1931.

I am very very happy to be Canadian. Increasingly so, actually: Canada is, on the whole, an enormously good place to live. I'm not "proud" of my nationality, per se, because I was born here: it was luck and not achievement that made me Canadian. But, mostly, I like Canada.

That said, I don't celebrate Canada Day. We do have celebrations, of course, but Canadians generally are quieter about their national pride than many other countries. "Patriotism" isn't quite the force here that it is in the US, for instance.

I also won't be celebrating today because Canada has still not dealt fully and comprehensively with our awful colonial legacy, and most particularly  with our treatment of our First Nations. It's a terrible stain upon the country: it's the one thing that actually makes me ashamed of my nationality. So, I'm wearing orange today, the colour that our First Nations use to remember the tens of thousands of indigenous children who were stolen from their parents and forcibly "assimilated" in residential schools. It was brutal, abusive, and an unapologetic form of cultural genocide; many children died from neglect.

So, happy to be Canadian. And wanting very much to be more proud of my country. Which is actually why I wear orange. We can do better.

ETA: Painting by the First Nations artist Kent Monkman. Sadly, this is pretty damned accurate.

He's pretty much a horse's ass, but he's somewhat redeemed by the fact that he knows he's a horse's ass and he plays self-mockingly with it.

He always used to remind me of my father. (But not the horse's ass part.)
