This is often a network issue so check all network connections and use a wired connection not wireless as wireless can cause problems like this.

The whole button is missing?  It sounds as if you are using the V2 viewer in Basic mode. That mode is designed as a stripped-down introduction for newbies to SL.  Once you have been in SL for more than about 30 minutes, you're ready to use Advanced mode, which has all the normal functions, including an Appearance button. Next time you log in, select Advanced from the login screen.

Go to your Library Clothing folder & drag one of the avatar folders on to your avvie.
