Rowan isn't wrong. Yes, there are plenty of non porn photos on newTumbl, but it's not surprising to me at all that the place has a lot of cartoon porn.

I accepted that reality when I signed up on nT. I've no issues with the pr0n personally, it's just fun entertainment I happen to like and that is OK, nothing more.

That's why I plan on maintaining my free SL Flickr account, largely for the community aspect but to also learn from other SL photographers and artists... some of the post process work more prolific Flickr users (SL and RL <--- which I do pay for) is too good to pass up and leave for what I'm beginning to view as trivial reasons IMO.

So, my question is - there are a few other competitors.  Is there any intention from Linden labs to link second life with any of them?

https://techboomers.com/flickr-alternatives

At the moment there is a monopoly and this seems to have pushed all SL users in a corner.  I personally intend to cancel my Flickr account, the customer service is somewhat wanting.  I do intend to load my photos elsewhere, I do not want to be controlled by some administrators of a photo depository and I dislike their attitude.

Not sure why they'd feel the need to. Their main Flickr account is already Pro and their largest official photography group only allows photos marked Safe, so they don't seem to be affected by this change much. Free users can still interact with them in the same way we have been all along.

Smug mug owns Flickr so that's probably off the table.  Photobucket has limitations on free accounts and 500px ToS does say no to...

2) To post or transmit, or cause to be posted or transmitted, any Content that is libelous, defamatory, obscene, pornographic, abusive, offensive, profane, or that infringes any copyright or other right of any person

Google is Google so that's a no for a lot of people, too.

As @Ayashe Ninetailssaid, the official SL Flickr only accepts G rated anyway so they have no reason to change.

A lot of talk about the porn side of SL. Question, is tasteful nudes or provocative clothes the same as porn? The Flickr bot often gets it wrong.

Mhm, the bot gets things wrong a lot from what I hear. As for the rules - According to this page on Flickr (Community Guidelines), artistic and educational videos with nudity *may be allowed* under Moderate. According to this page (Safety Levels), partial nudity in photos falls under Moderate. Full-frontal and more (photos only) falls under Restricted. Also - "Videos cannot contain restricted content and are deleted if reported."

It doesn't seem like anything but fully-clothed would fly under the Safe setting. With clothing, my assumption is if anything is visible enough to get close to "partial nudity" by their definition, it'd at least be Moderate.

I don't have much on Flickr & nothing that's NSFW.

Does anyone know though, what will happen to pictures that are set to Friends only? Will this be counted as Private or not?

Yup, sounds like it according to this blog post - "With that in mind, we’re limiting free accounts to 50 non-public photos (e.g. photos marked as private, friends, family, or friends and family."

Well that sucks. I have pictures of RL people and wanted to protect their privacy by having those photos set to Friends Only. I guess I'll be moving all of those to a new Facebook album now. 😞

Aww, that's a shame. I'm not sure if there's a better place to share photos that utilizes specific access levels like that. Umm, Shutterfly Share Sites and Google Photos might do it. OneDrive perhaps. Amazon Photos. Etc.

Edit: Rowan's suggestion will work, too.

Sorry everyone. I just started using Flickr again to post rude picks, so of course they update the TOS. My bad.

So far from exploring alternatives, my vote goes to NewTumbl. Its pretty similar and they allow pretty much most forms of legal degeneracy. So naturally, I'm all in!

It's beginning to seem to me like all websites want to stop the moral decay, like they don't care about money at all!

Almost like such Website Company´s wanna wipe out every Erotic, omg worse than Christians, next what comes is that Flickr says We are all Sinners, lool  🤣🤣🤣  Flickr look at this 🖕🖕🖕

To me, it seems the opposite. It's because they care so much about money that these things sometimes happen. Sites often go full cleanup mode when trying to attract new investor eyeballs, advertisers, someone with lots of cash to buy them out, etc. Maintaining adult content also comes with a lot of rules and regulations (usually), so you'll need good moderation teams. Banks and payment processors also tend to freak out when things go too...dark...so that's always another consideration. It's a hassle, pretty much.

No idea if any of that has anything to do with why Flickr made its decision (my guess is they just want to drive new memberships and make Pro more attractive, considering what's actually changing) - just a general overview. Flickr's changes aren't as severe, really, since free accounts can still view all content (confirmed by staff on their forum) - they just can't upload M and higher themselves. Content's not changing - they're just changing who can post it.

Thanks, but that won't work for me. Nobody but me is actually going to look at these albums at this point, but one has more than 50 pictures. Since I was just using Flickr for storing these 2 albums, I can move them to my Facebook account. I think Facebook is going to be around longer than my laptop will be.  🙂

Which shows us again that people are viewed in categories, rich and poor and nobody gives a damn about the latter!

And that´s everywhere in Real the same, your too poor for this? Than sorry you cant have or you dont get etc.

Another solution you've got - build your own self-hosted blog/website and design your own gallery/portfolio/albums there. That gives you the most freedom and the ability to monetize.

The only real downside to that one is you'll have to self-promote to get eyeballs (if you want them) and there won't be any sharing/group options. Unless - you're wanting to host other people's work as well - which gets a bit more complicated.

I guess I've just been on the internet way too long to get upset about this kind of stuff. I've seen sites rise and fall and change and destroy themselves and reinvent themselves a million times - raising fees, changing rules, requiring subs and memberships - often destroying users' hard work in the process - and the only surefire way to ensure total freedom over your content is by hosting your own site.

Does anyone know when this comes into effect btw? April 1st? TBH I am pretty convinced 90% of the Flickr-using SL crowd are blissfully unaware of these changes.

I'm assuming it's April 1st since people are urging users to not upload anything that day because of the new changes. Moderation also seems a bit more active than usual with even pro members complaining about getting some of their content removed, at least on my feed. Hopefully there will be a bit of a grace period.

I must say i am now on newTumbl and there we can do all create our very own Blog for SL, Like, Favourite others and follow them, Post Nsfw on newTumbl as Example its M for Mature, X for Explicit and W for very Extrem, what i dont use and dont need.

Thanks for mentioning this.

If that is the case IDC, as I really don't have much of the Moderate/Restricted material posted on my Flickr. I think I actually have more of that posted on my newTumbl account now.

That, and I've been spending more time online managing my Open Sim presence since last Thursday than being in SL, due to recent database issues in OSgrid. I've opened accounts for myself and my alts on Kitely.
