My rule number 1. When in the air: lock your floor.
That said, I always have a few spare floors right under my building platforms, because even with my rule number 1 I more than once made those falls. :D

I always lock the complete skybox as soon as the build and the texturing is done

And unlock it when I need to change texture or whatever....and forget to lock it again.....

It is a matter of time but I will fall in the near future

I live on the ground. Let me tell you, as many times as I mistakenly deleted my skybox; that 2 minute fall feels like forever.

Lol, I felt this.

Hah, me too! I'm also so bad at actually rezzing homes and skyboxes that I knock myself right off the platform more often than not.

I've done both, but I prefer a skybox usually. I like to build and redecorate quite often in different styles. It helps me unwind from my busy work day in rl.

And what a good idea about adding more than one floor! I've deleted too many skyboxes that I thought were locked.

Both as well. My husband and I rent from a private estate(mainland feels like playing russian roulette), so luckily we have theme on the region in terms of landscaping. Our main house is on the ground, while we have our skyboxes for other little themes or just where our adult furniture is lol.

When it comes to my Bellisseria home though, ground only. Far too nice a spot to live in a skybox.

I live on the ground. My house has been in the same location since 2009, when Zindra opened, and I have had the same house since 2012, although I continually improve it.

I like having grounds, outbuildings, etc. My house overlooks Linden water, and I have a boat dock. It also fronts on a Linden road. I enjoy these features. I also enjoy meeting passers-by.

Most of the time, my neighborhood has had a decent appearance.

I have a fantasy themed Bellisseria home, and a skybox.  It really depends on my mood as to where I stay, as everything is tied to a rezzer and I have multiple scenes to choose from.  On the ground level I have a house that keeps with the theme, and an anywhere door that connects to a skybox with a forested area in a seamlessly textured forested box.  With a click of a button all of it vanishes, and I can go to yet another platform in the sky and rez a castle, city, movie theater, island in the ocean, a functional swimming area, or a medieval tower.  I plan on adding more scenes as I can afford to put them together.

It is almost like having an entire region at the push of a button, but instead of going to the destination, it comes to me🥰  I use a fairy avatar, that is a fraction of the size of a regular avatar so everything can be miniaturized.  For example, the city appears to be about four times bigger to me, therefore I can modify the buildings to being much smaller, same with the roads and create a scene that appears larger than you would expect in a 1024sqm parcel.  It is more like having a 4096 parcel, and I even have a neat HUD that makes adjusting my camera very simple along with a speed hud that slows the speed of my avatar so it feels more appropriate to the scale.

Typically though, my home is actually the world of SL as I am usually active outside of my property driving around and exploring the rest of SL 🙃

Wondering how many of you live on the ground or in the sky and what is really your preference?

I don't live anywhere on SL now, but I used to love skyboxes...had a nice one with a crashed plane sticking out of one of the sides that a friend helped me make 🙂 There's something nice about being off the ground.

All of these are the same L$50/wk skybox.

I like that place, I used to rent a skybox from them and if I remember correctly they also rent homes on the land fairly cheaply.

My ground level is for the public, a patch of woods with a waterfall facing the central lake on Heterocera. My home is my sky platform with a modified Apple Fall New York Apartment below it. I enjoy making my bit of mainland pretty and inviting. I'm still waffling on the idea of either giving up 512m or adding another Premium account and adding more land for the coming year.

Almost always on the ground, for vehicles. Always roadside.

If I go into the sky, I go way up and build a space station of some kind or go fantasy style like Asgard. A floating house/grass plot looks stupid to me.

I have some stuff on the ground just to appease the neighbors so it doesn't look desolate or anything but I typically hang out on my sky platforms whenever I am at my plot. Building, tinkering or trying out outfits and looks and whatnot. Or just playing with any new toys and gadgets I have just bought.

My homes on the ground are in Belli, but I also have a skybox in Belli. I usually change clothes up there.  I go to ground when I need a dose of pretty scenery.

Before Belli came around, I would occasionally rent land or a skybox.  Right after I joined SL I started buying up some mainland parcels as they came open because I wanted a bigger prim allowance.  Eventually someone came along that wanted to build a resort and he offered me 20k linden for it.  I took the money and ran. The resort failed.

Ground, all the way, though when I have a lot of land there's usually a space station hovering up there at about 4000m. I like to keep everything "walkable" even with ways (shuttle or gates) to access the station without needing to teleport at all ever.

There is nowhere on my land you can't just step off the Linden Road and get to, though if you're not in the land group you're going to need to be picking locks to walk into anywhere.

I also don't use orbs or banlines, though I do ban griefers/stalkers/trolls/escorts who don't donate when using my 5k L$ bed (not currently up, there's a PG futon in my house now, not expensive toy-rezzing "adult" beds) to make their monies XD

My PC is dying, though, so I have the draw distance set at the minimum when i took this pic, you can't see the trees behind my home because they're more than 32m away.Snapshot_004.thumb.png.b1075ffbfac45cb58e84c60f8bca8070.png

Yeah, never build anything and expect it to "make it," only build what *you* want and can afford. I had a large area on the ground here but, after having nine months of cleaning up "adult" poseballs from PG land and banning idiots I tossed away most of it and just kept 2240 for my own personal house and some DFS plants in the back.

I don't mind paying to support things I like if people have some level of interaction, I know most SL "residents" are ridiculously cheap since it's a "free" game, but I built a really nice gym and I think three people in all the time it was open actually stepped more than 5m from the landing area where they picked up SML "dailies" and looked at what was there.

I never expected to make any Lindens from it, the donations were generally less than 500 L$ per month when I was paying $70-100 in tier, but having scanners set up to see where avatars go and discovering that I was paying for all this space when what people *used* could fit in a 1024 with room to spare was enough to get me to cut my losses and save on tier payments.

What a great idea, I shall adopt this policy at once, and call it the Sid Nagy patented safety net :)  I wonder if we could add bounce for full effect?

Ground. Always. I absolutely cant stand it when theres huge amounts of skyboxes everywhere all piled on top of eachother. Its sky clutter at that point.

In some places it does look a bit cluttered. I once had a castle in the air, it was the only thing in the sky at all on that particular sim, but it seemed a bit barking mad really, because the castle had a dungeon, and a dungeon up in the air is, well, too bizarre.

if I could tell you the names of the two sims I have property on, I would not stand a chance.

I couldn't tell you the names of some other regions I've had property before either, and you might very well be able to tell me if you had property on the sim I'm on now, the name is really special. But yes, mileages do vary, definitely!

Well, when I had rentals there were small skyboxes, the actual rentals were in buildings like row houses but the door to the "bedroom" was an experience teleporter that jumped them to a private box out of chat range of other boxes...

Though they were all between 2000-3000m, above flight areas for planes and helicopters and below the range for space craft, and invisible from the ground.

Gives them an "adult" area for things best kept private to be done without group IMs, but still links in to a community build where you have neighbors and communal areas to share.

A 64x64 chunk where you can put up a block of row houses gives you room for quite a few private boxes directly above them in no-mans-land, you only need 20m between them to have a truly private area, and if you stagger them in that square you can fit more than you'll ever need without ever being seen and it allows for CasperSafe orbs to be rezzed and linked to the rental box with a short range or area of exclusion so people can have their "security" without affecting anyone else.

Nice! I'll keep that in mind for my next rebuilding. Weird, role play often being my main sl pastime, I never thought of using those doors for, umm, my real self's real estate 😊

I have a house on ground level which I use. And a Belli home where I live in a skybox. But when at home, I'm mostly on my photo platform anyway.
