how do i get out of the welcome island if the destinations tab says socket operation timed out when i click it?

Hello DjAnntony. I guess you loged in Basic Mode with Viewer 2. Relog in Advanced Mode. You will find the option down in your log in screen.

 

Basic mode is a simplified interface to Second Life that's easier and more enjoyable for new users.

Though it includes only a basic set of features, Basic mode is just a simpler "skin" for the Second Life Viewer. Advanced mode offers the full set of features.

Another option: use the "Ready for more?" poster of the Welcome Island. See the end of this video:

It could be some connection issue causing that message.

Try unplug your modem and router for a minute or so, plug back in and let a connection establish, restart your pc and try to log in again. See if you can teleport out of there then. Also, if you are on a wireless network, try to connect using a cable to see if this helps.
