Why is my edit window empty?

anytime I right click adn go to edit on an object that I do not own this is what I get. I have combed thorugh my preferences... don't see anything that would  cause this???

@Chloe MineffCheck in the build tab (UI top menu) that you have not checked "select only my objects" in options.  Having that checked will do what you are seeing.
