Hi Everyone,

Does anyone know the average turnaround time for a specilist to address an issue?  Specifically I am stuck as an orange cloud, from what I think is a corruption in my inventory, based on hours of trial and error and research.  I've opened a LL ticket and it has been 3 days.  While i know that could be a short time, it is frustrating, to not be able to utilize my SL account to its fullest.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Bake fail is one of the most common minor annoyances in SL, and the easiest to cure, as Fritigern pointed out.  BTW, if you are an Orange cloud, you are using Firestorm.  If you submit a support case to LL, one of their first questions will often be "Have you tried using the standard viewer?", so try that first.  Or contact the Firestorm support group.

Install the stock Linden viewer and make sure you avatar has all the required base parts (skin, shape, eyes, hair/bald base) by replacing the ones you are wearing with different ones. Once your avatar rezzes, switch back to your usual.

Do not expect Linden Lab to support a third party viewer.

One easy way to do this is to temporarily wear a default avatar. You can choose one from the set in your inventory's Library folder, or (even easier) do a "character test":

Then switch back to your normal avatar.  It helps to have several outfits with all your body parts saved, so you can just grab one when you need it.

I was an orange cloud when I logged in today.  Did the same thing I always do.  Clearing INVENTORY cache, rebooted my modem and logged back in.  All was well.

What's happening is the viewer get given a list of the things that make up your avatar and tries to fetch those from inventory (cached or otherwise), and came up short on one of the required core parts. Most likely during the first step.

Changing any part of the default required avatar (skin, shape, linden eyes & hair) is typically enough to get the viewer to do the whole dance again, which resolves the problem most of the time.

Rebooting your router is generally good practice, and depending on your routine can be automated with a timer based wall adapter. 4am every day it gets powered off for 5 minutes or something.

(Domestic routers, especially ISP provided ones, are often under spec and built to a cost, they don't have enough ram and years of forced system updates from your ISP only ends up making the ram situation worse).

Rebooting the modem/router is something a LOT of people don't do. I reboot once a week.

1. Turn off all PCs.

2. Unplug the modem/router from the back of the device.  (I suppose you can unplug from the wall, but this process is how I was told to do it)

3. Let everything set for 5-10 minutes. Get a cup of tea, clean the kitchen, go to the head.

4. Plug the power cord back in, let it boot completely back up (mine has 2 green lights when booted up)

5. Turn PCs back on.

Unplug the router for 5 seconds. Done.

I, being the main provider of all electronic & network equipment in our households, (2 high speed fibre networks, 4 high performance PCs at times,
I don't count mobile devices as "worthy" of consideration),
will reboot everything or individual devices, when I sense network delays, suspicious activity, any unauthorised use or network abuse by giving
ONE MINUTE of warning to anyone using the systems at any time I see fit.
This maintains system efficiency and is also used as a tool to limit younger ones dependency on vacuous content, activities and behaviour.
If you have a uni project you're working on? Private business research or demands? Let me know about it way before the "event"
If someone proposes a day long gaming session? Fine! But you must ask first.
We all have relatives or guests who imagine they might sneakily download terabytes of data without others knowing lol.
No amount of screaming or tantrums will change the outcome or attitude of.... the network nazi! \0_  😝
Reboot as required. (often).

Just be aware that in the event of something actually weird going on with a machine you admin, first port of call should be to unplug it from the network and satisfy yourself that the weirdness isn't going to become a permanent fixture following a reboot.

Ransomware that's encrypting all your stuff  .. pull the plug from the wall, and don't power it on again without salvaging data on another machine.

Rootkit .. that reboot is a required step to gain ring 0, and can make it far more difficult to purge if you can even see it at all.

Don't discount mobile or "smurt internet of trash" devices, they present a broad attack surface.
