I signed up to a radio streaming service Hostgeek  The stream url they show on my control panel is  "RADIO SSL:  https://stream2.fre.hostgeek.com.au:7013"  .
This url works fin
e using VLC .  It will not play in Firestorm when I set that url on my parcel, whether I put the forward slash on the end of the URL or not .

When I play it in VLC the codec info is ;
CODE MPEG AUDIO LAYER(mpga)
Rate 44100 hz
Bits per sample 32
Bitrate 96 kbs

So I cant see problem.  Is the problem that my host has SSL encoded the stream , hence the http"S" in the url ?

the problem might be that SL still only supports mp3

from the wiki:
Streaming codecs are currently MP3 ....

i'm not sure that ever got updated.

I've *always* found Firestorm buggy with streams. At least once every two days I'll be at a venue listening to music and dancing and it'll either just cut out (only hearing environmental and gestural sounds at that point), or when a change of DJ happens it stops. The only way to get it back (toggling Streaming Music off/on in Prefs never works) is to TP back to my home for a moment (hey! I can hear my own stream!) and then back to the venue where, guess what? I can hear the stream again!

This happens so frequently now for me I just don't even try toggling most times, just TP and TP back. Annoying when the entrance of the place (say, Franks or Foxxies) is so far away from the actual dance floor.

Can you notepad.exe the URL ascii to see the diff ? I'd love to know

So the two urls my host sent me are;

Radio SSL:   https://stream2.fre.hostgeek.com.au:7013
Works in VLC, does not work in Firestorm

Direct SSL Radio Play URL:     https://stream2.fre.hostgeek.com.au/8028/stream
Works in VLC and Firestorm

VLC is your friend in these situations !

and also ..

https://stream2.fre.hostgeek.com.au/8028/stream

...only works in FS if you put a forward slash on the end

https://stream2.fre.hostgeek.com.au/8028/stream/

...which is the case with all streams in Firestorm I find.

I cannot get VLC to stream that URL. On Windows it says:

Quote

Your input can't be opened:

VLC is unable to open the MRL 'https://stream2.fre.hostgeek.com.au:7013/'. Check the log for details.

Not sure where this log goes, but when attempted from the console interface it pops up the same error message and in the console reports:

Quote

play https://stream2.fre.hostgeek.com.au:7013/
play: returned 0 (no error)
status change: ( new input: https://stream2.fre.hostgeek.com.au:7013/ )
status change: ( play state: 3 )
status change: ( play state: 5 ) : Error
status change: ( play state: 5 ) : Error

On Android the log shows a 401 Unauthorized error from "SonicPanel" server (whatever that means) but eventually reports from SHOUTcast "The resource requested is currently unavailable"

Usually I try these things in the browser first, and there I'm seeing a SHOUTcast stream status page claiming there are 0 available streams. I don't know what that means, if you're connecting to a stream somehow. (This doesn't seem like geoblocking to me, but I don't know what it could mean.)

ETA:

On the other hand, the URL that's supposed to work in Firestorm isn't working in the browser either, and chopping down to https://stream2.fre.hostgeek.com.au/8028 gives:

Quote

Your Radio is offline! Start your radio from the SonicPanel.

so maybe just bad timing?

ETA2: or... there's no point anybody else trying because the stream is only up when you're actively streaming to it yourself? Then… yeah. Maybe some other streamer has seen something like this I guess.

Hello Bronson

I have alot of experience with what your talking about contact me if you need any more help, I've been running Shoutcast and Icecast streams for 15 years in SL and on the Internet. Contact me via inside SL I'll give you my Email address run your Bit rate on the stream higher then what the music was recorded at, If your music is recorded at 128kb, then run your encoder at 192kb so it dont Choke and cough. MP3s have been changed as to how they are broadcast and listened to, But they can still be broadcast without https. They can still be broadcast as http.

Thanks
