Is it a violation of the TOS in any way to ask a resident for their RL ID to prove their age?

Rowan is correct on this.

You may not: Disclose Real Life information about someone else without their permission.

You may: ASK about a person's Real Life (but they aren't required to tell you, or to tell you the truth!)

You may: Tell someone else about YOUR Real Life information. (Just remember Ben Franklin's advice: Two people may keep a secret, if one of them is dead.)

If you have any questions about a person being anything other than what they say and you think you might be violating some real law then I would just stop communicating with this person is what I would tell your "friend".  What would make you think that if your "friend" did ask that they would give them their RL ID? 1. IDs can be faked 2. Someone could use anyone's ID.

You can ask anyone for anything. It doesn't mean that they are obligated to provide said information.

This is Second Life, not real life. No one is under contract to tell the truth except when signing up for an account and only to Linden Labs. Not another player.

Literally just in The title. asking to clear something up for a friend as  I'd rather have more experienced folk in this department answer.

I don't know that it is a violation to ASK for such info, but they sure as heck cannot share any RL knowledge with anyone else, as that is against the TOS.

Asking LL directly would probably be the best approach, rather than asking the other Residents here in the forums.

Although LL does have it's own verification, we've seen underage persons posting in these forums.  There are some escort/strip clubs that ask for RL verification.  As @Sam1 Bellisserianmentioned, even checking someone's RL ID is no guarantee that the person using the SL account is the person on the ID.

I'm well over 18 yet I would never in a million years give anyone in SL that kind of RL info.  It's foolish to provide it but asking isn't against the rules.  No one needs that escort job that badly.

Hey guys I appreciate the quick responces.  It's a security matter for a club, and I needed some other opinions/viewpoints. and I appreciate it!

Asking for RL id or photos or cellphone number or skype or whatever only guarantees one thing... that club is not going to have many members. Waste of time.

Also not sure what type of business would be in Second Life that requires more stringent age verification than linden labs already verifies.  Sounds like something that doesn't belong in SL if it does.

if said club is in collab with a RL business, they can ask for proof especially if it concerns a serious matter

They don't need any reason at all to ASK.  That doesn't mean the other person is obliged to provide the info, under any conditions.  And if the requestor does get the info, they cannot provide it to anyone else within SL without the consent of the person providing the info.

Any escort business might require proof of age only for the obvious reason.  Any virtual sex going on with a person who is under 18 in RL is against the law as well as the ToS.

Totally agree but if LL has verified that these people are old enough to go into an adult venue how can a venue or person be held responsible.

If an avatar and I meet and have sex and later claim that they are underage was it my responsibility to verify that this person was of legal age and can I be held responsible? If the answer is yes then there should be no sex or adult activities ever happening in SL.  If not then what does it matter?  What type of business would require additional age verification in SL? The only thing I can think of is if they offer cam or voice services and they take that outside of SL which should not be allowed anyway.

For all I know Rowan you could be 14 years old.

Yes, I joined when I was 2!

Joking aside, there was actually an incident where an underage girl working as an escort, told someone she was underage, she was reported to LL and it caused issues for the venue owner for allowing them there AFTER they were aware of her RL age.  The only way anyone, including LL knows my actual age,.is if I tell them.  Buyer beware?  There really is no age verification to join SL.

SL has its own age verification in place. If someone is under 18 then they simply do not have access to adult rated places.

You or anyone else do not need to add another age verification on top of that.

You mean the part where you pick your birthday? The thing that lets you choose ANY year? LOL

It says that you cannot disclose another Resident's info.  It does not say that you cannot ASK - and a Resident is allowed to disclose their own info.

There is a difference in asking for info and disclosing it to others.

Could you highlight where it says that. All I'm reading is where you can't disclose information about another resident.  Also, If I want I can tell anyone anything about myself, even my Social Security number. After all, it IS my information to share.

I think people are going to be getting a bit to upset over this,  just use the tos and all is fine, I'm not replying again.

No reason to be upset. Just want to make sure correct information is out there.

I ask people for RL info all the time like - their age. Doesn't mean they have to share the truth with me but I'm not violating anything by asking.
