Creating Mesh Clothes for a Specific Classic Avatar without Avastar.

I'd like to be able to create tailor made mesh clothes in Blender for specific classic avatars, which means I don't want to use standard sizes. I understand that the way to do that is to have the avatar uploaded into Blender. I was told that the easiest way is by using avastar, but I can't buy avastar at the moment, and I'm willing to do it the hard way, if there is a way.

 

1. So My question is, how do I upload a specific avatar into blender without using Avastar?
2. If a friend who has Avastar is willing to help me with this, how do they export it so that they can send it to me in a format that I can use in Blender?

I hope my questions make sense, because I've never used Avastar, and my friend is new to it too.
