Do You Get SL Weary?

Recommended Posts

Do you ever get SL weary?

I manage a populated club, and love it dearly - but most of the time, find myself feeling really quite lonely, and end up fed up and restless, when the chat and banter dies down, either from the general comings and goings, or from couples going into IMs.

I have many friends in SL, but at the same time, I usually end up alone going to gigs, concerts, exploring or events, when I am off work, as they are with their partners, or busy.  And that's fine...  but it's just lately  - after all these years, I find myself feeling more than a little weary of it all..... and yet, SL does (usually in a positive way) fill a basic gap that I cannot otherwise fill in RL due to living conditions and such.  I have had a few breaks from it - and always come back in almost daily, to fill that gap (and do my sl job) - but when I am in-world I get weary of it all so fast, and I am beginning to feel like I'm the only one that has this feeling, as no-one else I've asked, seems to feel like this.  I just feel a bit lost, and lonely, and restless in-world.  I have a busy RL that also is filled with hobbies, but SL does fill a vital gap for me, so I always come back, even after several weeks of breaks.  I don't envisage uninstalling for the foreseeable future, so I need to find a work-through, for these feelings.

I just wondered if there is there anyone else out there, who feels this way? - and if so, how did you get over it?

Managing a club is alot of work and I can understand if you tire of that at times.  Perhaps it is time for you to find other things to do.  Have you ever DJ'ed in that club or another?  Build?

SL is 'Your world. Your imagination.' so set out to find other things to fill your time other than managing a club or reduce your managing hours and explore.  I took a break from being a DJ between July 08 and Sept 09.  During that time, I learned to model in SL, became head trainer at a popular agency, and co-owned an agency. In Sept 09 I resumed DJing and I enjoy it now as I did in the beginning but I manage my time much better.

SL can be as relaxing or busy as you make it.

I did a club thing for a bit, every Sat night I rebuilt the inside of the club into a cave, forrest, farm, whatever matched the theme of the event that week. But after the event and i'm finally left to peace, i'll just start building something like a motorbike or something silly like a baloon noose.

Pretty soon I had all this stuff built so I started my own store and now I have plenty of stuff to keep me occupied =)

Hi Jinny!  Yes, sometimes I do get a bit weary, but never lonely.  I find my weariness comes from not knowing when to log out.  As you may know, times seems to fly in SL.  Oh yes!  Remember SL = Sleep Less!  LOL!

Peace!

Yes I used to get "weary" sometimes...and ended up not wanting to log into the mayhem of my SL day ! So I decided to find me a SL hobby..something not related to my inworld business..and I chose to blog fashion. Its kept me sane, I can spend hours in my studio, messing about with props, searching for new designers, and hunting down some background textures etc..Im always surprised when I notice 2-3 hours have passed , but Im totally relaxed and smiley afterwards :matte-motes-big-grin:

On a side note..even though blogging begun as a solitary thing I did.,and still is 50% of the time...Ive also met some incredibly lovely people through it, who Im honoured to now call friends ...

I love the silence in many occasions in-world and have no problem to explore alone or to go out alone, my real life requires me to come in contact with a lot of people business wise which is very stressing and consuming much of my energy. SL offers me rest and peace, a place I use to escape reality and a place where I can chill-out in "MY WORLD", a world I created around me, a safehaven I am fully in control off this together with my partner. No I don't need to be surrounded by friends or people to make me feel good in second life. So to answer your question, you're not alone (close your eyes and listen to this song, one of my favorite tracks) :smileyvery-happy: *meows*

Hello Jinnywitha. Yes i felt this way many times in my short SL. So i was changing jobs till eventually i stopped to work. I used to work almost from my first day in SL till 2 months ago when i stopped. I have done every kind of job you can imagine, except of scripting and building. There were periods where i was managing or participating in management in 2 clubs. Of course it was something i liked and i had unilimited time. Never i saw the job as a job. Always i had fun. It was for me a good opportunity to meet new people and friends from all over the world, to learn, to earn lindens etc. Gradually i realized that i hadn't any time for myself and that it wasn't the lifestyle i dreamed. I tried and i found other things to do. That's what i suggest for you too.

Do you ever get weary of your RL activites too though?

I know I sometimes do (actually, I get weary a lot, but there's a particular reason for that!)

My point is, Yes, I sometimes get weary with things in SL just as I do with things in RL. It never really has to do with SL itself though. It's more that I get weary of particular people, attitudes or activities, just as I do in RL.

Best thing to do in those cases, as you have rightly stated, is to simply take a break, refocus on something else for a while, try something new etc. That's always been my advice to anyone who feels 'weary' about anything - take a break. However, the absolute worst thing someone can do is blindly destroy the thing they were weary of only to want to come back to it weeks or months later. Somthing that I have, unfortunately, seen happen a few times with SL when people close accounts only to come back later annoyed that they have lost tons of inventory etc!

I find myself frequently SL weary.

On occasions when I'm very busy with RL work I find it difficult to switch into SL. On other occasions "demands" within SL to chat or to attend events, etc., can leave me exhausted. On these occasions I reduce the time I spend inworld until the RL work demands subside or the SL "demands" reduce as people move on in my absence.

After a few weeks of reduced SL activity my enthusiasm usually returns.

Yes.

Take a break from SL. Take a break from the forum(s.) Change things up in RL and/or SL. Find something new.

Re-examine why you are doing what you are doing, and what it is you are actually sick of. Address with appropriate solution.

Maybe try creating an alt avatar, revisiting those days when you were new, shamelessly grabbing up every freebie in site only to quickly realize why they are free, and trying not to be too embarrassed when that freebie starship fighter shoots off out of control right into the crowd. Frequently hitting SHT-CTRL-H to bounce from Info Hub to Info Hub just to see what new ones have been built and how old familiar ones have changed. Observing some of the fr^H^H^H^H unusual crowds that show up there. By reflex sitting down on the nearest seat, or rezzing a cube if one isn't available, when attacked by a griefer and observing all the stuff they try on you, and how long they keep trying. May not sound like a fun time to a lot of you, for me it was surprisingly refreshing.

Oh, she may be weary
Young girls they do get weary
Wearing that same old shabby dress
But when she gets weary
Try a little tenderness

You know she's waiting
Just anticipating
For things that she'll never, never, never, never possess
But while she's there waiting, without them
Try a little tenderness (that's all you gotta do, this is for you)

It's not just sentimental, no, no, no
She has her grief and care
But the soft words they are spoke so gentle
It makes it easier, easier to bear

You won't regret it, no, no
Young girls they never forget it
Love is their only happiness
But it's all so easy
All you gotta do is try a little tenderness

etc...

I'd would be surprised if someone told me that they never got weary of SL at some point. We all get weary of things, whether it's SL, summer ales, chicken pot pie, or whittling wood into small avatars of oneself. Unless you are teetering on the brink of addiction, SL is an optional entertainment and, like Donald **bleep**en's "Nightfly" album, you are allowed to ignore it for as long as you like, knowing that when the mood takes you, you can always play it again and enjoy it as if it were new. I can sometimes go weeks without engaging in prolonged SL activity - and that's even more likely now the sun is shining and there are exciting things to do in RL. So take comfort in your weariness and realise that is merely an indication that you are human after all.

I have not yet been weary of SL. I'm sure I will, though, as I do get weary of most things in life at one point or another. As others have pointed out, it is not uncommon to have that feeling.

SL is really just another thing we do, another activity, so the way to get back into SL, and  SL is going to be the same way you get back into other things in life when you feel weary about them. To me that means finding something new, or different, to do to get my mind and my curiosity going again; getting a different perspective on things. In SL, that could be taking a course on a subject I don't know much about, seeking out other types of people than you usually mingle with (could be RP, could be different types of clubs), finding an activity you haven't tried, moving to a different type of place, or - as somebody said before - create a new avatar and start SL again.

The key is to find *something* that grabs your interest again.

SL weariness is completely normal. Sometimes I may have *months away from it. I havent made anything for over six months as RL is waaay too hectic atmo. But I'll be back into it soon enough. To be a creator of anything or even just a shopper and socialiser takes quite a bit of effort and you do get exhausted with it sometimes.

Opps that was meant to be a general reply Luc. pardon :-)

I think everybody, at one time or another, has been weary of SL.  When i find im bored out of my tree, i usually take a long boat ride along the Blake Sea (or a plane ride, depending on how bored i am).  Its nice to just be able to kick back and relax, enjoy the scenery, and let your troubles slip by.

Of course, there are also lots of cool people who also do the same thing, so meeting new people there is fairly easy, too.

Ooh, that was a most excellent example of the "blind censor" at work! Apparently if we want to talk about Steely Dan, we can refer to Walter Becker but not Donald **bleep**en ;) I guess the censor needs some fining tuning to recognize word boundaries that are marked by the SPACE character.

Mmmh, so no talk about the Jewish character in Oliver Twist, the UK pop singer who remade "As Time Goes By," or the St. Louis Browns' catcher in the late 1890's.

Funny, I bet the words "Steely Dan" get through and we all know where THAT came from! And I don't know whether the Doobie Brothers will slip past the PC sentinel ;)
