The latest Snowstorm viewer [ Second Life 2.7.2 (232036) Jun  5 2011 10:55:16 (Second Life Development) ] has a new toy that could be interesting for some applications. There is a new debug setting called BrowserEnableJSObject. It defaults to FALSE, and for now it is a per login setting. So, this feature is totally opt in.

If you enable the setting, it is possible for Javascript running in Shared Media or built in browsers to retrieve some viewer information -- current region, coordinates, the avatar's heading in degrees (facing north is 0), viewer language setting, and maturity preference. There are notes that more variables could be exposed later.

For some details you can see the patch here.  There is a test page at http://callum-linden.s3.amazonaws.com/slviewerobject.html that shows how to retrieve the values.

[ Not related but also cool from this build -- viewer cache can now be set from between 64 and 9984 MB. There is a cap built in for how much memory VFS can take, so most of this will be used for texture cache. Also the old Clear Cache button has returned.]
